Tesco Self Service Till and Using Own Bags

If you were unlucky enough to work in a supermarket, you'd soon see why they don't trust anyone!

Why can't they be either silent or very quiet and have a BUTTON for the hearing impaired to press to make it louder. I can't see a single reason for them to be so loud, I've never heard a checkout bird/dude have to yell that loud at anyone, ever, in 28 years.

They can be as quiet or loud as you like; there's a volume button at the bottom of the screen on the NCR ones that everyone except Morrisons use.

While having THAT much is not on, in the "big" Tesco in Purley last month I had one of the half trolleys and was standing in the usual checkout queue only for one of the supervisors to suggest I use the self check out. I said that there was a limit but she said "no its fine go on."
 
I work at one of Tesco's 'flagship' stores, I think we have 4 basket and 4 trolley self service tills. And just one person mans all 8 of them!
 
Sometimes they work,sometimes they don't!I find Morrisons the worst,people always calling an assistant.It can be quicker to use the manned checkouts.
 
I only really use it when I have a few items. Never had any issues, but then I don't often go to the supermarket for a few items.
 
If people were a bit more honest in the stores you could just scan everything as it goes into the trolley and pay at the end. that would save time.

Sadly too many people will just steal stuff.

Why have I never noticed this? Will be checking hen I next use them. Our local Asda ones are fitted with megaphones theyre that loud.....
 
all you have to do is, put the bags on before you start scanning stuff, simples.

and if you need more then two bags then you should be using a normal till.

also get you clubcard, purse/wallet out BEFORE you get to the till.

also the till is digital not analogue, so scanning harder, faster does not work.
 
I had a 10 items attendant have a go at me the other day telling me I should use the self service checkouts....... changed her tune when I told here if everyone did that she'd be out of a job!

More trouble than they're worth those things.
 
The ones at my local keep throwing hissy fits, several times they've gone mental trying to scan stuff, sometimes even saying "replace item into bagging area", so sometimes I get a freebie if I'm getting two of something... :confused:
 
I've had may be a couple of issues caused by myself when it asks you to "place item in bagging area" , the only thing I notice is that some supermarkets have quicker systems than others, Sainsbury's definitely seemed to have upped their game.
 
Hate them personally. But I think its what I buy that lends me to this.
If I am not trolley shopping then I am generally picking up stuff that seems to fail in them, anything like DVDs, alcohol, some bakery products, fresh produce etc. All either dont allow you to do it or seem particularly sensitive on being scanned.
A lot of the typical basket shoppers seem to have DVDs etc and are the ones who then hold the whole process up as they cannot proceed.
Agree on the bags thing, annoys me. What I have found is that its worse when there are two of you, you can't have one scan and the other pack as its too fast for the machine, so it keeps warning on weight.
My other half saw someone scan a couple of cheap items and hold onto an expensive one, pay, then drop expensive in bag as she picked up the bag.

I totally agree normal tills are faster than self service, unless there are massive ques at the normal tills.

I still think internet shopping is the way to go. I wouldnt be surprised if at some point you can do internet ship but go and collect your pre done shopping, would also get you to the shop and that way you can impulse buy offers and also pick up items that you forgot to order etc. That I would pay a couple of quid for as it would save me the hastle of the main shopping. I love internet shopping but always seem to forget 1 or 2 items or have 1 or 2 subs that I don't want that means I have to go to the shop and hence a lot of the benefit is destroyed.
 
A short time ago at B&Q I bought some Fly Spray and thought I'd use self-service. I ended up waiting about 2 mins for someone to show up and authorise it... What was the point?
 
They're wicked, when you scan something, you just drop 2 things in the baggage area at once.

You get some amazing discounts. ;)

Aint that the truth - try using one of them with a back-pack.

I use them frequently and have virtually never managed to complete a shop without having to call over an assistant to override the alert from the EPOS device. I have used them in Tesco, M^S, Sainsbury & B&Q - they all have exactly the same problems.

This is all down to an attempt to prevent "shrinkage" by checking the weight of the scanned items. Since the assistant just comes over and overrides the alert without any serious attempt to check what is causing it, there is absolutely nothing to stop dishonest customers passing two packs of tissues over the bar-code scanner whilst putting a pack of tissues and a jar of caviar in their bag.

I did once ask a store assistant if they were worried about job security with the introduction of these devices - she wasn't - customers hate them!
