Steam vs Retail

As repeated many times, I love Steam and buy all my games on there now -

- Save game backup
- Auto patch updates
- Stupidly cheap Steam holiday/weekend sales
- Can install on as many PCs as you want
- Can install many games very quickly
- Usage tracking
- Friends easy to keep in touch with

Etc...

Retail version via e-tailors all the way until its extinct for me ;) Prices are so much cheaper its a total joke how the publishers insist on digital downloads being same as retail which means they get much more profit from fewer sales or even more profit when the game is popular

Steam is fine for the odd sale bargain but even then I know an e-tailor who does recent PC games for around £10-15 only 6-8 few weeks after release & offers free recorded delivery ;) That's unbeatable for the money as if it goes missing they give you another copy after 3-5 working days usually once you have completed an online replacement declaration.

Recently my pre-orders were:
Lost Planet 2 £17.95
Dead Rising 2 £19.85
F1 2010 £19.85
Fallout New Vegas £24.99

All much cheaper than Steam & I also bought Kane & Lynch2 + Blazblue Calamity Trigger for under £38 (both games as well brand new with recorded delivery on release date).

P&C for myself

Pros-

Automatic updates.
Don't need the Disc.
Easier to manage.
Most PC games come in a flimsy DVD box now with no gen booklets, usually only a leaflet.
Steam Deals

Cons-
Higher price

It's either worth it or it isn't, it depends on how much I want to play it.

I quite like steam but the prices dont make much sense to me and put me off. I quite like the fact that my games are stored on an account rather than having the actual disc though when in a rush it can be a pain.

I've always been a manic collector and was staunchly in the camp of collecting the retails versions with discs, manuals etc. After a recent house clearout, I feel vindicated in the switch to mainly going with steam - no clutter of old games that I can't be bothered to dig out anymore! :p

Also, it's not like you often get loads of nice stuff in retail packaging anymore like maps, booklets, and trinkets. I like the way I can just backup my whole steamapps folder to an external hard-drive. If I have to reinstall windows then all my games are reinstalled pretty quickly :D

If a retail version has limited activation DRM, I'll go for a steam version, even if it's more expensive. Unfortunately often the Steam version has the same DRM, in which case I won't buy the game at all.

I like steam but 49.99€ for a game lololololololololol
rofololololololololololololol

I do get games via nice ocuk british players for 40€ I think that's the most I've paid.

Release day games usually take 10 days to get here in Belgium (but only on release day) non release day games take 3-4 days to arrive.

I think games retailers put my order (international) on 3 or 4th Batch post release since they know they can blame it on international post.

i always prefer retail as i like to have something material in my hands which i parted with money for, rather that 1's and 0's. on the odd occasion though i have purchased from steam.

LEAVE NOW WHILST YOU STILL CAN.

Can; open. Worms; everywhere.

LOL!

I used to always buy the physical discs in the stores but a combination of the PC shelves getting smaller and smaller every time i went in and being in the habit of trading games in for new ones, then wishing i still had them a year or two later encouraged me to switch to buying via steam.

prefer steam.. but don't mind buying the odd game through online retailers due prices.

Iv got black ops pre-ordered for 29.99 but steam have got it on a higher price.
