Shocking service from high street store

My friend recently bought a Nikon D3 from a highstreet store. As it wasn't in stock they said it would be delivered within a few days. When it arrived it was clear the box had seen better days. On opening it we tested the shutter count and found it had already done over 6000 clicks.

He phoned them up so a new replacement could be arranged and was told they can't garrantee the replacement will be brand new! The customer service advisor said it's quite comon for people to buy a high spec camera then return it a week later as it works out cheaper than renting one.

Anyway, the first one was sent back and another was delivered. The replacement is the same with only a few less clicks.

Is it too much to ask for a brand new camera when spending over £3000? The seller clearly knows they're sending out second hand stock!

Surely what they are doing isn't legal, selling second hand goods as new? I'd get a full refund and report the matter to OFT. I trust it is advertised as brand new?

Not surprising, Jessops have sold used bodies as new for a long time now. I speak from experience.

yup my mates D300s had over 5k on it, returned it to the store told the manager and he tried to BS him saying that it was most likely Nikon doing factory test's, got his full refund and bought it else were

If the seal is broken they could say someone had a look, fair enough…the key to check is stuff like the battery, is the little blue tape still on the plastic bag the plastic wrapped in? Is the charger and cables tucked in nicely in the box?

If the signs points to a second hand unit I ask for another one from stock or I leave.

Then again, the last 2 bodies I got them both online, both brand new.

It was Currys.

The camera was sold as new and he paid full price.
I thought it wouldn't be Jessops. I was always under the impression they wouldn't accept a DSLR as a return unless it was unused.

I'm more amazed that Curry's actually sell a D3 in the first place, let alone pass off used ones as new.

That is pretty bad, they should change their return policy or start selling stuff as refurb.

Head into the store - ask for the manager and tell them that if they do not supply a brand new security sealed D3 - you will report them to OFT. Otherwise get your money back and buy elsewhere.

Happens all over the place unfortunately, I RMA'd a pretty much brand new Netgear NAS and they sent me a "refurb" which was actually an old unit from the company Netgear bought out and looked like it had been thrown across a concrete floor. When I complained they said they always send refurbs for RMAs. In the end the place I bought it for took the original unit back for a full refund.

Having now had the chance to have a quick mooch around for pricing on D3s, I'm pretty sure the reason Currys are able to sell them so cheaply is they've bought in a load of ex-demo or returned stock from somewhere.

How else could they have got stock they can afford to shift on at £2.7k?

I was going to say, if it works and it looks new what are you moaning about... but a 3k camera... I think its fair to demand a factory new item...

It doesn't look new.

However, you're saying that if you buy a new product (of any price) but receive a 2nd hand one you shouldn't be annoyed?

Demand a refund.

Go to local trading standards and let them know.

Write to Nikon to let them know. I suspect they will be interested that a major UK retailer is tarnishing their brand name.
