I would be amazed if anyone could work out what happend ... look at the state of it!

I wouldn't be, if people can figure out the failure point which resulted in the crashing of a plane I'm sure its possible to find the origin of the fire in a largely intact car, the starting point if the fire is usually quite easy to identify.

The guy in question is very well know in the MG world. Big MG Parts supplier/workshop/tuner for years.
 
Where is the battery on a E60 M5, passenger side? I'm guessing the fire started from that side.
