Hi all,

Was put in an awkward situation today where I found myself blocked into a parking spot by another car, when I say blocked in there was still just enough room for me to get out but as I reversed back i slightly nudged the car that had blocked me in...

Got straight out to check for damage when a good to do member of the public ran straight over shouting "I saw that, make sure you leave a note with you're details" then went onto take my reg himself and asking my name saying he would be back to check...

I then went over the car and noticed a chip on the bonnet that couldnt have been me as it was already rusty and a crack in the bumper that looked old aswell... there was no damage to my car or excess paint to make it look like I had just caused the marks.

The man went onto ask if i wanted to see his warrant badge and demanded I left my details even though it was clear to see the damage was not caused by me slightly rolling back!!

He went on his way saying he would be back and I went onto knock around local houses trying to find the owner of the car just to clear up the whole situation hoping they would be honest and admit the marks had been there for ages...

After knocking on a fair few doors in the street nobody seemed to know who the car belonged to and since I was sure I had not caused the damage I went on my way not leaving any details.

I was thinking if i left my details this is just giving the person a perfect oppertunity to force someone into paying for old repairs by me looking guilty be leaving my details.

What do you guys think, am I in the wrong even though I caused no damage and what would be the consequences if this passer by went back and left a note claiming to be a witness!!

Bit of an awkward one I know but I wont be happy if I get stung with a bill for something that wasnt my fault.

Thanks, Sam

I would have told the do-gooder to sod off then I would have left a note on the car saying 'I'm only leaving this note because someone is watching, however if I wrote your car off it would have made a vast improvement therefore I'm not giving you the opportunity to take the mick just because I reversed into your POS at precisely 0.1MPH'.

I took pictures of the car at the time to show the damage, theres no way I caused that damage.

If I did I would have happily left a note rather than going through the insurance.

Trouble is, now you've essentially "failed to report an accident", the do-gooder and/or car owner could report you for such

Fair play to you for getting out, checking the damage and even going as far to knock on a few front doors.

I wouldn't worry about it.

so did you leave you details then ?

Personally i'd have denied all knowledge if there was no new damage to either car and drove off. If anybody came knocking i'd ask them to explain how this alleged incident took place when neither car is damaged and there is only one witness who falsely claimed to be a police officer, and who was in fact just a busy body neighbour irate at you for parking where you did.

With only him as a witness, and no damage to either car, what's everybody else going to think ?

Should have put on a French accent and said "It is a bumper, it is made for bumping. No?". They seem to love the practice of braille parking over there :p

If you're 100% certain that you caused no damage then I say you did the right thing. By leaving details you're effectively having to trust another person which, when it comes to the possibility of free money for them, is a risky thing to do.

The guy in the street should have kept himself to himself, ****.

My car is french, I approve of this statement!

The previous owner obviously did as well. I think i've added enough new marks to match his or her accomplishments :D

P.S This is true of crappy 12 year old french cars that already have ruined bumpers, not nice cars. Nice cars get keyed instead by jealous french car owning people :P
