Need power in my garage, need advice

Because they know what their on about and no offence to the op but from his post there seems to be a bit of ifs and buts in his knowledge

I wasnt quesitioning i was just trying to further my knowledge. tbh "because" isnt an explanation...

It don't work like that here, An electrician may well b-able to do the job for something close to £300, To have a totally separate supply put in you are talking thousands.

Ok, thanks for explaining that.

Bury an extension cord beneath the frost line in some conduit, then. :D

My Gaff is a bit of a joke, there is a bit of Twin and earth dangling from the corner of the eaves of the house to the corner of the eaves of the garage.
Been like it 37 years :D

If you're just after a double socket and some light in your garage then just run a cable out there in a bit of conduit buried in the ground. Put a plug on the house end and a four-bar on the garage end and plug in a lamp! Just be sure not to put a spade through the cable sometime!

If you're after anything more, involving a seperate fuseboard out there, then imho you don't have the knowledge to do it safely, so get a sparky to do it. Besides, that would be a permanent installation involving adding new circuits, so needs part P signoff to be legal. (In case you don't know, part P is a building regulation for electrics).

Not linked to anything in particular with this thread but:

My mate rents a garage about 5 minutes drive from his house. It has no toilet facilities and so he makes do with a bottle....

/Completed unrelated post over.

A plastic carrier bag is also a useful thing to keep handy for the occasional No. 2. ;)

Whoa, You could tell I was in a rush when I wrote that OP.

I'm confused, why do you not just link it up to your house supply. That's what we have done and we have a triple garage with a two bedroom summerhouse built above it all connected to our main house supply with a separate junction box in the garage.

My garage is not next to the house, I live in a semi detached house, my neighbour to my right has his garage with mine attached to the other side.

=

He's allowed me to use his power supply if I pay for it. I know if he moves or I move I will have to stop what Im doing.

Do you have any idea how much that would cost?

OP

You really don't seem to know what you are actually doing, Please don't play with electricity, Contact an electrician please.

O'rly
I have contacted an electrician and he said the legalities of putting conduit over some ones property is a 'grey area' and he was not prepared to do the job. Please be constructive in the future. Thank you.
If anyones got any advice on how to get a Light in my garage please do tell.

If it were me and i was on friendly terms with the neighbour then i would buy a reel of armoured cable, run it away from your building into your back garden, then run it round the back fences through his garden, then back towards your garage building.

Without seeing a diagram of the way the plots are set out i am not sure if this is possible, but it is the route i would go. Ie, the cable would cross his land, but not actually be attached to any of his buildings and would stay right out of the way around the back of the plots.

Neither is mine, my garage is some distance from my house, I had an electrician lay the cable from my house to the garage and fit the lot. You can't take the supply from your neighbour it is illegal.

By the looks of that plan, he does not own a route between his 2 buildings. Therefore technically there is no legal way to do it.

Although i wouldnt do it hence my other suggestion (as it could lead to arguments), connecting to his neighbour is hardly going to get anybody into trouble.

Seen the layout now and I'd suggest digging a trench and laying some armoured cable from your own house, through your neighbours back garden and to your garage

From seeing the diagram that's exactly what I'd do. Use power from your house, but use your friendly terms with the neighbour to have it buried in this garden.
