Married 30 years today - spec me 3 nights in Edinburgh

Congrats mate. Eating wise, I would really reccomend The Kitchin. It really is fantastic! Lunch is amazing value at £24.99 per person for three amazing courses! It's also a lot more relaxed and informal compared to some michelin stared restaurants I have been to; Martin Wisharts is the total opposite for example.

I also really liked 'The Dogs'.

In terms of where to stay, we always stay with Gareth at Fraoch House. He is a fantastic host, and the breakfasts are awesome!

I have heard bad things about the witchery. It's mainly a place for fat, american tourists. I do know Tom Kitchin is very close to his 2nd star, so you might want to get in before he puts his prices up ;)

Simple stunning - check out the reviews on tripadvisor. Stayed there with the missus for 2 nights for our anniversary. Amazing place. Well well worth it. (penthouse suite). Check out laterooms.com as we got our room for £150 a night (also worth contacting the place before you travel as they sent us complimentary champers for out anniversary)

Eating - The Kitchen is very very nice but very very expensive!!

Plenty to do - Castle, Shopping, Zoo, walking up Arthur seat on a nice day is superb.
 
Congrats mate, I got married last year myself, long way to go to our 30th anniversary!

I definitely recommend doing one of the ghost tours down the Edinburgh Vaults, they're brilliant, we did this tour: http://www.mercattours.com/ghosts-and-ghouls.asp

You get a complimentary drink at the end of the tour, then after it, I recommend heading to Nicol Edwards pub, "Scotlands most haunted Pub", they often have live music there and it's a nice wee pub.

Mary King's Close as suggested above is good fun also. We actually have a photo with what honestly looks like a ghostly outline from when we were there too... spooky! ;)

The Zoo is great too if you're into that kind of thing. A look around Edinburgh Castle is recommended too - weather wise though, I doubt Arthur's Seat will be much fun, but it is great in the summer if you're ever back!

The best place in Edinburgh to see Haggi in the wild is Arthurs Seat. However any hill will do.

You see Haggi have shorter legs on one side of their body than the other. This is so they can run round hills faster. This is also how you can tell female and male haggi apart.

The males have shorter right legs and the females shorter left legs. This means they run round the hills in opposite directions and mate as they pass each other.

oh and congrats on the anniversary.

I'm lol'ing at the idea that a Southern could catch a Haggis let alone know how to cook the delicate beast!
I just came in to suggest visiting Glasgow instead, because it's better! Congratulations.

Grr, &*#@$*# Dan Brown and it now being famous for that. It's an amazing place and well worth going to see (there's also some lovely walks round Rosslyn), it's just an irritation that the main reason it is known now is because of that.

Interesting, most of the people I know who've been recommended it quite highly but maybe it's gone downhill since then as that was a few years back now.

If you can catch one then you're welcome to cook it, they're not that easy to get though. Swans such as those you'll find at the wee bitty pond on Queen's Drive at the bottom of Arthur's Seat are still a no-go though.

Congratulations on the 30 though, my parents will hopefully be reaching that particular milestone in the next couple of years.

Of course you'll be safe and Edinburgh is a beautiful city, many others have suggested quite a few good places to eat, there loads to do including museums, art galleries, pubs and tours.

This site is quite good for finding live bands

Hopefully you'll find something that suits your musical tastes - hope you both enjoy your trip :)

and last night I went to see a really crap covers band that wouldn't get gigs in Stoke.

Rosslyn Chapel was an upset.
We caught our own bus for £1.20 and admission was £7.50.
I've had an active interest in this place since I read books in the early 70s about the Knights Templar and always wanted to see it.
It's basically in somebody's back garden and just a bit bigger than my gym in the back garden.
Hollywood don't half make stuff up (which I already know) but Rosslyn Chapel in the Da Vinci Code is completely made up.
I'm still glad I saw it though.

Intersected at Crewe Station where around 100 Stoke fans got on and I've never felt so uncomfortable.
Grown men being louts bit I got increasingly worried about the suitcase we'd left in the corridor outside the carriage.
At the next stop I decided to check on it to be greeted with 2 Stokies just about to throw it onto the platform at Alsager.
I begged them not to and then ended up being nose to nose and forehead to forehead with one of them who threatened me and told me to get out of his sight.
I'd got no seat to go back to because somebody was now sitting next to Mrs Poole and he got closer and closer to headbutting me.
I picked the case up and made my way down a busy carriage just to get out of his way.
To say I was poo'ing myself was an understatement.
Idiot.

I didn't really like my fish & chips on a piece of wood though.
