Gonna order a gtx 470 gtx tomorrow, currently running sli gtx 275's, no dx 11, from what ive seen of the new ati cards, im not that impressed tbh, i can get a 470 for the same price, better driver support from nvidia helps as well, and better overclocking potential from the 470, am i a bit mad to switch from what i currently have, thoughts and opinions appreciated.?

Sounds like you made up mind already.
Dont understand why people need to justify their purchases.

470 in a SLI is great though, was thinking of it myself. Your getting a lot of card for your £.

I would say try and get the Gigabyte GTX470 SoC model if you can stretch to it - tho its a bit of a hard sell when you can get the regular models now for <£200.

I went from heavy OC'd GTX260 SLI to a single GTX470 and I find it smoother and more consistant in most cases... nothing to do with "microstutter" or that rubbish just that the average fps tends to be more stable - especially in more intensive scenes it doesn't bottom out as the SLI setup sometimes could.

As I mentioned before knowing what I do now I probably wouldn't have been in a hurry to upgrade but neither do I regret doing it or feel it was a waste of money - once you get the clocks on the 470 to 800MHz or higher its definitely better than the old 200 series SLI.

With the current prices nothing can really touch a GTX470 @ 800MHz IMO.

the new ati model that is going for £200 runs cooler and uses up less power than a gtx 470 i believe.

however i am a nvidia fanboi, so go for it ^^

Same here had 260's in SLI and now with a single 470 clocked @ 800Mhz it's just as good as my old setup :)

470 sli is my long term plan, i dont tend to buy single high end cards, particularly on release, i prefer to buy mid a range single card then add another, (my mobo is xfire/sli capable.

I remeber Rroff, you mentioned this to me before mate, if i do get the 470, it will be overclocked, (aftermarket cooler as well), something i couldnt do with my current sli cards due to pcie space, tbh ive neer had any issues with sli on theese two cards, and "microstutter", never experienced it, i know im only running a 60hz lcd, (benq fp241w), and im definitely not cpu bound with an i7 at 4ghz.

Yep, ive read the reviews, but they dont see to offer much more performance when overclocked, cooling isnt gonna be a problem in my case, im running a full tower lian li case thats like a mini fridge.

GTX470 SLI was my original plan... but I can't seem to justify it - everything just runs like a charm on a single card... maybe if I tried metro2023 I'd have a different opinion but it doesn't appeal to me and seems poorly programmed to me, can play games like Batman AA, Mass Effect 2, etc. full quality settings @ 1680x1050 and still get well over 50fps most of the time with 32x TRAA.

Im mainly playing bfbc2, moh and waiting on black ops and bf3, sli 470's will be an option, psu permitting, (corsair hx 850w). Moh runs very well, bc2 is a wee bit slower, both at 1920x1200, 4xaa 8xaf, dx10, lowest fps is about 40 ono, just fancy a new card as well tbh, im the nutter that went from a 3.8ghz q6600 to a q9550, just because i wanted to try one.:o:D

The price 470's are at now they will do everything you want and in time you could add a 2nd when you feel the need too.

Bang for buck the 470 at current prices is right up there, at 800Mhz or more AMD have nothing that can touch it for performance at the current 470 prices.

I would wait for the 6970 as it really isn't far away.

I don't think the OP is looking to spend over 300 notes on a GFX card.

I recently added a 2nd gtx 275 as it was minimum expense for maximum performance. Unless the heat & power consumption give you sleepless nights you're better off sticking with what you have until a more substantial upgrade is available.

Dx11 isn't a big enough reason to change to a new card in my opinion. Saying all this I've been thinking to change to a new card too just to have a new card! Afterall many folk just like tinkering with their rigs almost as much as gaming on them (me included)!

May be put it this way...if you can sell your GTX275 for £70-£80 each, then add a little extra you would be able to get a GTX470 and with warranty (so you are like paying the extra for the warranty in a way :p)

To be honest, I think a 6870 and GTX470 both are decent cards at around the £180 mark. But I think which one to get is depending on expectation.

If not overclocking and just using the card at stock speed, 6870 would probably be a better choice because it would be cooler and most likely be quieter as well.

If don't mind the extra power consumption, possible heat and noise, and will be doing some intensive overclocking, then GTX470 would be a better pick, since there's more overclock headroom, and the performance gain on overclocking is better than overclocking the 6870.

At least that's the way I see it.
