6850?

It sort of makes sense when you realise that the 5850 and 5870 card are being dicontinued.

The new line up will be (as far as I understand it)..
5770 - entry level card,
6850 - entry mid level card,
6870 - high end mid level card,
6950 - entry performance card,
6970 - high end performance card,
6990 - monster card

ah cheers! then why not call it the 6770? thats gonna get a lot of people
Yeah there's a lot of rage going around because of the name change.

Most just think it's a deliberate marketing ploy aimed at the average Joe consumer who will purely look at model numbers and think larger number = better.

It's annoying, but if you spend a few minutes looking at reviews, it should be obvious how the cards fall in terms of performance.

cheers maybe thinking a couple of 6870s... i will wait a while see whats what after xmas i think or grab myself a couple of 5850s?
Probably a wise choice if you don't need to buy right now. Reports say the high end 69xx ATI cards come out late November/early December, so it should drive current prices slightly lower.

I wouldnt grab a pair of 5850's unless you already have one - a pair of 6870's would be cheaper (looks like they scale better with crossfire too even if just by a little). Don't forget the 5850 and 5870 are now end of life so what's left on the shelves and in the warehouse is all that's left!

The top end card will be the 6990 though which will probably cost close on twice the price of the 6980 which we don't even know the specs or price of yet :D

Awww man it makes me sad reading this:(. Only a couple of months ago 5850/5870s were the rage and now their era is coming to an end. Makes you wonder at the rapid pace of change in computer hardware. Sigh:(

If it's any consolation, if you do own a 5850 or 5870, there's not much out there that you can't play at complete max settings.

On another note, whilst change is good, it makes the buy-waiting game much harder. As in, you can buy now or wait just 1 or 2 months for something newer and better to come out, such is the pace of the turn over.

No, the 6850 is nearer to a 5770 perfomance wise. The 6870 is the card you would be looking at if you want performance somwehere between a 5850 and a 5870.

Not true, considering that review show the 6850 beats 5830 consistently.

Infact, the 6850 is about 5-25% slower than a 5850 depending on the resolution and the game.

Stock 6850 also consistently beat stock gtx460.
