E36 328 - Tell me

Can't agree with you there.

"Only" a second? That's pretty much an eternity when we are talking about things like this. You will notice a second in a 0-60 sprint unless you've got a wrapped sense of speed and acceleration.

8 seconds to 60 is by no means fast. Diesel repmobiles will be making you their ***** at the traffic light GP.

Even the meanest diesel repmobile of them all - the Audi A4 2.0 Tdi S-line only has a max of 170bhp. There are 143 and 120 bhp versions depending on how far down the pecking order you are :D

Even the 170bhp one only manages 0-60 in 8.3 seconds in FWD form.

Hardly owning anybody on a traffic light Gp with that speed.

I was basing my comment on particularly successful carpet salesmen with A4 3.0 TDIs (In S-line trim I imagine ;)) with a 0-60 time in the 6s :D

OT but I really liked the M50 2.5 in my BMW, lacking in torque though but sufficient enough to get even the heavy 5-series around. Lovely smooth engine.

Anyway, if you want torque, that's what the M60's or M30's are for :D

If you fancy it go for it, but not without expecting bills. Cant really say more than the others have said in here.

Bushes.a common complaint on all bmws and that most people appear to be oblivious to.

Diff mount and prop donut can cause a thump when you pull off and change gear, nearly all the e36 i have been in do this.

Heatshields rattling, again common.

Heater only working on full, common, easy fix but fiddly.

Rust on boot and rear arches.

Lack of low down power on the m52 could indicate a sensor or more than likely the vanos unit/seals.

The bottom line is they cost a lot to keep right and a lot of people scrimp along and ruin them.

Could I interest you in a coupe instead? ;)

Cheers for the post :)

I know the bushes have been done (in the last week actually)

Will check other stuff though, thanks :)

(spose before I go any further I REALLY should do some insurance quotes :o)

Won't be many of those as a percentage of repmobiles sold will there. So yes, you are talking rubbish tbh :)

Phate, the e36 looks good in sport trim, the things on that car aren't ott and don't look too bad IMO :)

I'm not actually.

The argument is you describing a 8 second to 60 car as fast, not what percentage of 3.0TDI audis used as repmobiles.

Slow car is slow.

you must have some high flying reps near you then. Most of the ones found on the M62 / M1 day in day out are 2.0 ;)

3.0 TDI has a BIK value of 27 % vs 19 % for the 2.0 TDI 143 PS manual which is what most will have (only 1 % higher BIK than the 120PS model)

Although quite why people choose to run these over the new 320d efficient dynamics i dont know. 13 % BIK !

But doesn't that one have crap seats, terrible tyres and lesser performance so that weight and power is reduced just so it can get into the lower tax bracket?

Slow car is slow.

Honestly Joshy does it matter? My last proper car was 7.3s to 60mph and topped out at 145mph. It was a quick car.

However, .7s slower and 5mph slower top end?

I'll live, I'm sure :)

Cheers, I like it and the wheels tbh :)

yeah, but your getting paid to drive up the M62 to chorley, so who cares if its crap ?

its a bit like me complaining my computer chair isn't quite comfy enough when i'm getting paid on a night shift to watch TV and play games all night.

And in the case of the 320d ED, it costs not a lot in tax either, which is great for a work tool.

Not really. It just annoyed me that Mobra has had a go at everyone who has dared to question anyone who his opinion of a 328i auto being fast.

If it's sufficient for you than good luck, just don't come around claiming that it is a "fast car" when it blatantly isn't.

Haha whatever. You'll grow up one day :)

Phate, I think the mv2's look better than the m3 alloys that people put on, from the e36 :)

The M52 - IF SERVICED CORRECTLY - is an extremely reliable engine imo.

£3k seems high for an e36 328i.....

The "slushbox" is fine as long as you leave it in sport mode, its a bit slow on the change up / down in regular "E" mode

Make sure it has decent tyres, happy shopper variants will make it drive like a lairy Mk2 Escort in the wet.

Just my input as the owner of a 1996 328i Auto.....

Mine averages 26MPG ish and I tend to drive it like the rocket powered rollerskate that it feels like after a Scania!

I'd happily have another.

I paid £900 + a shagged mondeo 18months ago for mine, and its a 4 door SE. Ok, its a bit scruffy on the usual areas (wings & arches) but otherwise sound.

The price seems very high even if it is at the top end of the market, that said, buying on condition above all else is the thing with these, but by God you seem to pay for it !

Cabs always cost a little more though, but always worth trying to get a lower price :)
