Best Value Graphics Card - GTX460?

They are about on par at stock give or take 2-3 fps, the 460's linked run cooler and quieter than the 6850/6870, the 470 runs hot and when overclocked will be noisy with reference cooler. £150 gets you a top quality card that will overclock past 6870/470 performance.
Has there been another review that compares the 6850 & 6870 overclocked vs the 460 overclocked aside from this one?

I'm a little suspicious over the results on that Vortez site, but if they're accurate, the 6850 overlocked is faster than the also overclocked 460.

Get a GTX 460 768MB if your monitor is smaller than 1920x1080.
Get a GTX 460 1024MB if your monitor is 1920x1080 or larger.

You can overclock them very easily without adding extra voltage, and it will give a significant performance boost.

No need to buy the special edition ones such as MSI talon etc. They are designed for overclockers looking to push their hardware to it's limits.

The MSI & Gigabyte basic models have very good cooling and you can save £25+ by overclocking them yourself.

I settled on a GTX460 after finding out that my old as hell motherboard doesnt like the new ATI cards.

I was thinking of the EVGA card because it got good reviews and has a superb warranty (also heard their tech support is top notch), but now that that MSI card is down to £150...

That's a hard decision.

Also, am I living in my own world, or does the 470gtx clock higher than any of the cards in the £200 price bracket. It's the fastest card. The 6850 is great when clocked, and thus the 6870 is not worth the added premium as is pants when oc'd. Go for the lower of the chipsets and OC up. 6850, 460gtx (dual fan), 470gtx (oc to nearing 480 speeds).

Trouble is the 470 is LOUD when overclocked...

I would get the MSI, EVGA don't like dust, which they say voids your warranty.

EVGA card is external exhaust model, which is slightly noisier and runs slightly hotter than the other coolers. The Gigabyte cooler although it looks like it exhausts all the air into the case, the fans are angled slightly to push some of the air out through the vents. The internal case temp difference will be less than 5 degrees difference.

MSI card has one of the quietest and coolest fans available on the 460. I'd get it from the sale if I were you ;)

I recently bought the MSI GTX 460 hawk and have no regrets, it's cool and quiet and since the introduction of the new nvidia drivers incredibly fast.
A few people did advise me to consider the 470 as the price difference has started to close dramatically but a friend of mine has one and it is noticeably louder.
However in the latest edition of custom pc the review the Zotac 470Amp which has a custom twin cooler on board and it's very fast and now quiet ...............but the price is a bit higher £240 i think.

Personally i think the gigabyte at £150 sounds a cracking deal.

"As for the Radeon HD 6850 however, things are much more lopsided in AMD’s favor. It’s give and take depending on the benchmark, but ultimately it’s just as fast as the GTX 460 1GB on average, even though it’s officially $20 cheaper. And at the same time it draws less power and produces less noise than the GTX 460 1GB. In fact unless the GTX 460 1GB was cheaper than the 6850, we really can’t come up with a reason to buy it. For all the advantage of an overclock when going up against the 6870, the stock clocked card has nothing on the 6850. Even the GTX 460 768MB, while $10-$20 cheaper than the 6850, still has to contend with the fact that the 6850 is almost 10% faster and only marginally louder."

This.

Currently, the 6850 can be had for £135, the 460 1GB is around £150.

Unless you want the Nvidia features (CUDA, PhysX), the ATI's seem a better buy. Also the 6850 overclocks very well, but I'd still like to see a good review from a reputable site between a 6850 and 460 both overclocked.

Also the 6XXX can bitstream HD master audio without issue a very big plus for some.

Some people love ATI some love Nvidia. In the end it can come down which side of the fence you like/trust the most..........brand loyalty is pretty big in the graphics card industry :)

I don't care who makes what

I want the features and speed and price to dictate what I buy not who makes it.

Yeah, I actually prefer Nvidia, mainly for their drivers. However from a price over performance point of view, the new ATI cards (or AMD if you must) are hard to beat.

Gigabyte and MSI 460 1GB run cooler and quieter than the 6850 even when highly overclocked. The 460 can bitstream HD audio.

This is true, since going back to Nvidia I find their software much better than AMD's, the CP offers so much more over the CCC, this make me less want to go back to AMD even for a faster card. Some people take this in to considering when purchasing a card, it just does not always come down to performance or if a card uses less power, especially when cards are so evenly matched performance wise.

From what I can see the 6850 and the GTX 460 1GB both overclock to the same level. So we should expect price equivalency between those two products. The difference in power consumption is 30 - 40w under load.

They will both meet the speed of a stock 6870. When overclocked this will match a GTX 470 in performance, with significantly less power consumption (At least 50w difference, if not more) and in turn, noise (Assuming stock coolers, 3Db at idle, 6Db under load).

All of this needs to be taken into consideration, and should influence purchases.
