For space/mecha needs..

I'd recommend Macross Frontier (2008) the latest in the Macross Franchise. Stunning visuals in HD and some absolutely great music/characters.

Gundam Seed/Destiny - Despite all of the cliches, the characters are pretty engrossing once it gets going. A very well done war story imo.

Other's i'd mention that you might find interesting in the genre that aren't entirely space based or are a little different.

Gurren Lagann
Eureka Seven
Heroic Age

I could never really get into Vandread, felt like a chore getting through it. Although it is different and does turn the usual set up around a bit.

Another vote for Stellvia, a nice and optimistic series, more slice of life than over the top action really. Can't say that much about Freedom though, although i've not watched it all yet. But what i saw was very good, it has that nice retro feel to it.

Planetes as a space series from what i've seen/heard looks very good, very realistic in many ways (action/reaction, problems with space debris, radiation etc*).

Kiddy Grade and Stelvia are also very good space series, Macross Frontier (I haven't seen yet) is meant to be good, as is the original Macross and Macross Plus (although Macross looks it's age, and M+ is starting to look a little old but still very good).

*The series is basically about a bunch of junk retrieval operatives.

Watched a couple of other things ...

Shigofumi - Letters from the Departed ... A nice series over all although it was a bit depressing in places, (far to much about bullying and suicide at times).

Big Windup ... Now this series has a bit of a reputation as being bad due to Funi saying they were unlikely to license the second series due to the first selling so badly. It's a series about a new high school baseball team with the main character being the pitcher who is a bit of a wuss. I found it an interesting watch although it does suffer from a couple of issues, not enough cute female characters and the overall pacing is a bit slow. In 26 episodes we only have two games and each game is covered by too many episodes. But overall <£17 for 26 episodes is pretty good though.

If you liked Big Windup try Princess Nine if you can find it and haven't already seen it :) (I bought it on a whim at the recommendation of some AOD'ers when it was on offer ages ago and it's a favourite of mine).

I think sometimes some things get a mistaken rep because people tend to assume "doesn't sell enough" equals "not good enough", which unfortunately isn't the case, as there are plenty of good series that have been dropped after one season, or never licensed in the first case because the Japanese wanted too much for it to be likely that the Western companies would be able to make a profit :( (especially true for Funi who like to make sure that everything they release is dubbed).

I'm not watching much anime at the moment, as I've been unable to get much "uninterrupted" time, and I've got Aliens on blu-ray arriving tomorrow so that's going to take a while to watch fully :)

I have, and have watched and enjoyed, Princess Nine already ;)

I'd add into the mix Taishou Yakyuu Musume which Sentai are releasing in the next month or so ... another nice baseball series, (in this case a female team ~100 years ago).

I'm staying quiet as recently I've been watching K-On!! (Not into this as much as the first series so far, it was the music side that really attracted me to the first series, and this one seems weaker so far in that respect), with random episodes of Asobi ni iku yo and Excel Saga slotted in, neither of which have a solid plot worth speaking of, but are there for light relief :)

Am getting closer and closer to watching Eureka 7 haha

Eureka 7 has quite a few (well it's a long series) OP's and ED's and I find most of them to be pretty good.

With K-On!! ... don't know how far you have got with it but I really like the insert song from ep24 ... really nice and really fits the mood of the episode at that time, (and hopefully I should be getting the album with it on for Christmas).

Currently started watching Telepathy Shoujo Ran, about a girl, Ran, who has got supernatural powers and then, so far, does various things with them together with her friends. It's light, a bit supernatural, a bit comedy and gets about as tense at times as your average Scooby Doo episode.

I'm only up to about episode 10, so quite a long way to go yet. It may improve, just the new music I've heard so far doesn't really appeal to me in the same way the old stuff did. As a series it seems less musically focused (in it's own way, because let's be fair K-On!! is never THAT focused) than the original series, and there's less emphasis on the music element :)

I mean strip the vocals away from some of the original tracks and they've got a definate rock edge, the newer stuff so far in S2 just doesnt appeal in the same way.
Might get more into it as time goes long; given S1 was only 12 episodes it almost seems strange S2 is double :)

Oh and just watched Unlimited Blade Works. Obviously as a story arc it's no where near as complete as the series, given the time span, and is pretty much a lot of pretty fights and artwork strung together, but visually its sometimes very good. Some of the attention to detail like some of the castle scenes were very good, very nice artwork.
More of an action movie than a semi-thinker like the series and (as I understand) games though, if you haven't at least experienced SOME Fate/Stay Night elsewhere...you'll probably be very...very... lost.

In much the same way as the Haruhi movie was 'for the fans', so was this...although I'd say Dissapearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film was the better film [and not because its like an hour longer, it was just a lot more evolved, whereas UBW is very much a rush/condensation of a game arc and it does show by how schizophrenicly paced it can be]!

Yeah the roles of the other characters and servants have taken a backseat completely so unless you are a fan of the game or at least watched the TV series to get some idea of what this is about, this movie will just be very confusing and so you won't really feel or even know who the hell some of the characters are.

The animation certainly was very nice, with the fluidness of the fighting and sword clashing, and some impressive zoom & 3D camera pan shots.

I do like how Lancer got a slightly bigger role and shows how awesome as a "Hero" he can really be.

Yeah I found the UBW movie disappointing.

Horribly rushed, jumping from one battle to the next with very little downtime for the exposition it badly needed. Luckily I have played the game so was able to join the dots but on it's own this is a poor movie.

Ok, typically I watched episode 10 of K-On!! after writing the above post last night and its about Sawako and her past, so because of that the music was infinately more awesome with guitars in the background at points etc even when not focusing on music, and overall a lot more emphasis on actual music in this episode...hmmm more of this please lol

:DThanks for that mate:D
Will definately be keeping an eye out for that;)
The girl playing the photographer girl i thought looked spot on for the charecter, not too sure about the actress for Yumi-chan though, yumi has lighter coloured hair in the anime and in most pics/drawings i have seen
Good news either way
Funnily enough i have been reading the light novels, well just started.I am finding them good with a few translation foibles

I've never seen/understood the appeal of anime/manga but have always been intrigued by its fanatics. HENCE I have borrowed Akira, Fist of the North Star, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away and Ninja Scroll on recommendation of a friend.

I shall report back :)

If you don't like them we will hunt you down, and hurt you.... lots!

Akira is a bit dated and i never really liked the art style of its characters much. Many like it as iirc it was one of the first biggest animes to have quite a lot of animations in it so you see a lot moving and stuff.

FOTNS is ok but drags on a bit at least it did when i saw it on c4 15 years ago or so it just never seemed to progress or be interesting.

Spirited away is nice, good storey and characters.

Ninja scrolls is a bit of a adult one iirc i think i started watching it but stoped and not tried it again i might one day soon tho but i have a lot of anime to get through.

I would say some good anime is urotsukidoji but it is rather adult due to rape etc from demons but the story and animation is kick ass which is why i love it. Code Geasse is fab it will keep you on your toes as it is really good at being unpredictable imo one of the best of its class for that alone is reason enough to watch it imo. Project Arms is a good one with a good story and great action scenes with cool arm weapons. Fate stay night and claymore are also both excellent animes to watch. Paprika is just great, very interesting and wonderful anime film. Black Lagoon is awesome for its bounty hunter style story and action and great anime quality. Which also Cowboy Bebop is of the same calibre.

Something to think about Jingo.
