Squatters and UK law

If they've got in through an open skylight etc... then I guess you have to wait for the court but the thing that gets me is if they've say forced entry (causing some minor damage) to say a door/window then surely they can be arrested/prosecuted for criminal damage?

Also I believe if you can gain peaceful re-entry then you can get rid of them - not sure exactly what this entails but I don't think you can just start kicking off -presumably if you manage to get in through a window say in the middle of the night, lock yourself in the bathroom to avoid a confrontation and then call the police then the squatters will have to leave?

No way I would stand for that. The last thing I'd be doing is informing the police. (well not first thing anyway)
Round up a bunch of mates, go round there mob handed, kick the back door in, throw anything that looks like squatters possessions into the garden and set light to the lot of it, then phone police saying house is being burgled and they are armed... Start fighting until police arrive...
Squatters have rights my arse!

"Sorry officer, I was upstairs having an afternoon snooze, redecorating this place is hard work, anyway I wake up to the sound of breaking glass and come down to find the back door broken in and three blokes in my living room, as you can imagine I feared for my life so started smashing face" :D

no items in the house.

We’ll go if the court tells us to but until then we’re staying. If he wants his things he’ll have to wait. If I find a job then I’ll start paying rent like a normal person.’

They have turned the front room into a sixth bedroom and are using Mr Gupta’s wardrobes to store their clothes. They are also making use of his three leather sofas, sauna, hundreds of DVDs and television.

And they're students with fancy clothes and a tv not homeless destitutes

Balanced opinions as ever in GD.

Squatting laws were put in place for good reason, though that reason doesn't really apply any more... It might do, soon, if the housing crisis gets much worse.

If you see my post before that, I said I don't have a problem with it in an uninhabited house if it's an alternative to being on the street. Busting into someone's house whilst they're away is different and I don't agree with it. I also said I think these guys/girls should be removed forcibly.

There are situations in which I think "squatting" is acceptable. ;)

agree with Lewis, i'd be paying the local yob family a nice lump sum to get rid, it wouldn't take long and their belongings would be burnt outside with them watching

Ironically, you'd then be guilty of assault and battery (albeit by proxy) and criminal damage, at which point the police would be interested.

I used to squat
If we made a mistake and the owners came back we would just move on
We never damaged any property
Once the owner came home at 0200 after trip abroad
and found 8 of us asleep in the house - we explained the situation
and she let us stay the night - next day we cleaned up her garden
all good friends
Never any nasty business from our side

If it's uninhabited and unlocked, then what's the problem? It's an empty shell of a house, no items in the house. They're either homeless or in a house that wasn't being used, I think I'd prefer them off the street...

Becuase they dont own the property, thus they shouldnt be allowed inside.

For what reason?

GET THEM OUT!

And how does this work? The house is empty so they brake in, claim they didn’t do the damage and change locks, and the house is basically theirs because of Civil rights?
