***Official Halo Reach Thread***

Can anyone explain how exactly the matchmaking works?

I keep getting paired with people who are way higher ranked than I am. Every game I play there is at least one person who is Lt.Colonel.

I'm only Warrant Officer 3, so by no means highly ranked. It really sucks because I keep getting beat, which results in Halo rage, which results in a broken TV :(

You can choose to restrict the search to people of similar ranks.

You're right. Completely forgot about that feature. Always kept it on no restrictions, so quicker matchmaking, but if it works well then I don't mind being patient!

Well the search restrictions don't work.

Just played two different games and both parties had 3 Lt.Colonel's in them.

How does this game match players? Seems to be worse than MW2 at doing it.

to be honest, nobody on this game who is Lt.Colonel is really that stunning at the game, they've just learned the ropes, the best way is to play them and learn from what they are doing to beat you...im personally Captain Grade 2 but make a habit of gunning down Lt.Colonels and Majors without much trouble! ;)

I probably do just suck. Its annoying though, if I could get paired with people like a rank or two above, then it shouldn't be a problem. But I keep getting Lt.Colonel's all the time. Can't remember the last game where there wasn't one of them.

If this keeps up then its off to Black Ops :(
 
The ranks really don't reflect skill in Reach, its far to easy to spam your way up to Lt Colonel therefore there are loads of them. Apparently, there is trueskill behind the scenes aswell but who really knows.

How anyone could leave Reach for COD baffles me. COD is just SO unbalanced I would rage quit after one game I think.
 
thing is though, lots of Lt.Colonels are absolutely terrible, so many people boosted their way to that rank. reminds me of the Hayabusa armour in Halo 3, anyone wearing Hayabusa automatically thought they were class, when infact they were usually terrible! stick to doing team games (invasion, team slayer, etc.) and stick as a team, you'll sharp start to realise rank is pretty meaningless. there are some really bad ass Corporals out there as well, see them owning Lt.Colonels sometimes...:D

I think i'm too use to putting very few bullets into enemies in MW. I can leave it and go back to it, weeks apart at times and still do well.

The grenades in Reach really really pee me off. Seems everyone but me can land a grenade at the feet and completely rip the health/shield down.

I dunno, im just annoyed. Just can't understand why im good at one game and then completely rubbish at the next. Yes they play differently, but the same principles are there. It makes me wonder how "newbies" feel when they play. If some random person just bought Reach and went online, they probably wouldn't play again.

The Halo 2 ranking system is actually still there, you just can't see it because a bunch of hyperactive 13 year olds started trying to sell their level 40+ accounts, and it encouraged hacks & modifications to the game.

When you get matchmade into a game as a Warrant Officer and get your ass kicked by a Lieutenant, he was drawn against you for a reason.
 
I think people are putting a bit too much stock in the ranks, ranks don't equal skill and in the grand scheme of things the top rank at the moment isn't massively high...

Either way I almost exclusively play team game modes so there's usually a balance of ranks.
 
Aye Rank means nothing in this game, it's basically just an indictaor of how much time you've put in, not your skill level.

TrueSkill is still going on behind the scenes and that is what is used to matchmake you (assuming you've chosen to be matched to players of similar skill).

Personally I just let it match me with anyone, don't care if I die, it's all part of the fun.

Some games I do great, other games I get my ass handed to me on a shiny platter. :D


In other news, anyone else feel that Juggernaut is the most pointless game mode ever. It just doesn't reward skill in any way shape or form, and basically comes down to fluke. If you just happen to be the person to get the last shot on the Jug after everyone's been pounding on them for the last minute.

And a warning: I have recently quit too many games, etc etc.


Which is strange, in the last 200+ games i have quit twice through ISP drop-outs.
Once from being kicked (betrayal .. stray nade :( )
And twice in BTB because i refuse to play for 90% of the game mode me + 1 other vs a full team when the entire team has quit.

And now its decided im some sort of serial quitter? =/

That visor has been around on the bungie updates for a while but don't know how/if you can get it. Map pack looks good, it's nice to see that there's another vehicle based map coming too.

Not had any probation messages and maybe 4 or 5 games quit out of 200 or so... But over a long period of time.

Further to the rank system debate, I haven't ever been matched with people that were "handing my ass to me", the only times I have a bad game where I was getting killed a lot was more due to circumstance or mostly lack of people on the team due to quitting.

EDIT -

I have ooo 370,000 ish credits, that's taken me say 7 weeks

(370000 / 7) * 52 = ~2.75mil credits a year if I play it the same amount as I have been currently.

So in about 7.5 years I'll get that visor \o/
