New PC Spec (critique please)

I personally still think that the GTX470 isn't a good investment. The £40 price premium doesn't bring that much more performance, you might as well just get a GTX460 and overclock that, and you'll be at a similar level. It also means that you can get a cheaper power supply. A quality 500W power supply is plenty for a GTX460 SLI setup.

Now that you have decided on a 1.5TB hard drive, I'd suggest the Spinpoint F3 model.

Looks like a cracking spec.

The only thing I would change is the case, but that is such a personal choice based on what you think looks good and I do not know anything about the quality of the Antec.

like the ability to take the filters out to clean them and i think its big enough to house mount the H70 internally.. nice hot swop slot on the top ... like anteks too ive got two of thier 900 cases and they are great very happy with them.

If you like it, don't hesitate to get it!

Still wish you'd give ATi a go - 6870's are beasts!

But, seems like you won't :( Good luck with the build (don't forget a build log with lots of pictures :p)

you tried nvidias ? or have you swopped about all the time ? i dont want to touch them because of a previous bad experience... much like i wont go out with a girls from hartlepool :) just curious as to why your trying to turn my head ...

NVIDIA all the way for me im afraid ... i did dabble with the darkside in the 90's and regretted it i also have some quadro's in machines at work and they are always causing bother.

2 things:

1 - The 90s were a long time ago

2 - Quadros are made by Nvidia

Nowt wrong with 470 at all at it's current price, but dont restrict your options for lame reasons :).

Ive had about a 50/50 split of each brand.
"Oddly", had more issues with nVidia then ATi.
Don't know why everyone has such a preconception that ATi are still way behind and crap - they haven't been for around a decade now!

There is nothing wrong with the GTX470, don't get me wrong.
But the 6870 is newer, faster, generally considered to be better and from what I've seen cheaper!

ofc *facepalm* i mean fire gl ...

ati drivers were always dodgy and produced artifacts on the final renderings. not to mention they fell over regually when i was halfway through a large cnc program.

90's were not that long ago ... to me anyway ;)

hmm ...

read a lot about them now and i cant make my bloody mind up between them on paper the ATI seems to have it with a faster core but 200 meg less mem ... the power usage of the ati seems less too...

decisions decision decisions .....

well that's pretty convincing ... looks like im going to go for an ATI now ...

what would have course swing it is if COD black ops had physx support ...then i would be on the nvicia bandwagon again ...

best go check that really.

nope no mention of PHYSX support for COD BO

sooo... ill take the risk again and go with an ATI

Get in there quick with the today only HIS 6870 for £190!! The tiny overclock on that Asus you can do yourself easily in 30 seconds with a slider tweak in the drivers. Asus on pre-order anyway. Good luck with the build.

Strong build. I would change a couple of things on there and that would be to get the mx-4 paste not the mx-3 paste as the mx-4 is slightly better and also spreads better. I would get the H50 save abit of money as you dont really gain that much.

mx4 out of stock ... order placed now though although i did have to ring and change the GPU to one that was in stock ;)

Don't tell me.
A GTX470 :(

Or, hopefully, another brand of HD6870

another HD6870 ;)

get a free COD mw2 with it apparently ... would be handy if i didn't already own it and play it on a daily basis...

so onto ebay it goes and save a little cash and maybe get a 5.25 fan controller ...
