Mate. It is a safe generic greeting, basically meaningless and not likely to result in violence. It is also extremely amusing to hear Yanks say 'mate'. It sounds so wrong.
On one or two occasions I've found myself using the term 'love' to some ladies when out on delivery. That must stop!
As for the other options, when I've been addressed by the term 'bud' 'pal' or 'fella' that does jar a bit. I suppose it must be a regional thing.
Usually say, "You alright dude?","Wassup Pard", "Alright Boss". Something like that. If i'm totally familiar with the person it can stretch to "You alright you gooch?"
I hate when people say "Mate" when i'm paying for something in a shop. Total stranger saying "That'll be a fiver mate...". I'm not your mate and i don't want to be either!
My mate is from Essex and i am a scouser and he allways says to me 'allright fella' or just says 'geeza'. Problem for me is that i now say it all the time to my fellow scousers who give me a funny look.
