Switching off the mains is going to be the first thing I do. I'm going to be grounded obviously but to get to this broken wire I'm going to be on a step ladder.

The question I need to ask, how does one join a broken live wire in the lighting system?

First off do you actually know what you are doing? Electrics aren't something you should be toying with if you don't.

If the broken wire is in a cupboard or the loft or anywhere you can get to without moving the floor/wall then you can just use a junction box. If its in an inaccessible place like under the floor or in a wall etc then crimp it.

Where is this broken wire and how do you know it is broken? Is the whole cable broken or just one core?

i have 4 of these in my living room.

I angled one of these to reflect off the wall and in doing so the socket popped out of it hole. I was not fully supported (only using a chair) and I let it hang on its own weight to get the ladder. When moving the spot light about it went off. I switched off the room lights and noticed that the brown wire (live) was disconnected.

In what way were you going to be grounded?

simple solution

1) go make a cup of tea
2) open yellow pages
3) find electricians section
4) phone an electrician
5) sit back and feel your manness fading away
6) rejoice that you have not killed yourself

In response to Foxtrot26 NOT op...

7) Also rejoice in the fact that you are a 21st century man who enjoys the best in technology - yet doesn't know where the magic electrical light-bulb wire goes.

Very much this for me. I'd rather be less of a man than a dead one and the OP really doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing.

Eh. So there's nothing wrong with the cable, it's just popped out the light fitting?

Screw it back in you numpty! It's not rocket science!

Cables don't just 'screw' back in however - the point of his original post.

Plus he's on a step ladder - and grounded somehow.
