How long is the gen going to last?

the reason why sony and ms have just relesaed move and kinect is to prolong the life of their consoles

it will be another 4ish years

I personally think the 360 is feeling more dated than the PS3. I don't see Kinect being able to extend the lifespan as long as people expect. Plus I got the feeling when I was playing Halo Reach that that was as far as the 360 could go in terms of graphics, and I think the moments of framerate drop are an example of how much Bungie pushed the console.

As for the PS3, we're yet to even see GT5 released, and I feel like the PS3 has more headroom in terms of power and still hasn't been completely maxed out by any game yet. I'd say the PS3 could conceivably last another 3 years before it really starts to feel dated, though I wouldn't say the same for the 360. That needs an update in the next 2 years.

Unfortunatly the ps3 does not have much headroom, if any. It's on a par with the 360 and both are highly restrictive.

Restrictions aside, I'm glad the consoles are likely to hang around for another few years. Developing for new hardware is just going to cost more money when people don't have it. Right now the industry can make money off the tech it's been creating for the last few years, which is very much needed.

I still think there's headroom in using the Cell SPUs for GPU operations. As far as I can remember, no game yet has thrashed all seven SPUs and the GPU to the max.

how do you know if it hasn't got much headroom?

it takes years of programming on a specific console, before programmers start to find new techniques and efficiency's in order to gain more.

personally i can see the ps3 lasting another 5 years. the 360 another 3. this is minimum. the wii was a gimmick, it needs to be updated as soon as, but i dont think there is enough space for 3 consoles in an online market currently.

i can see there being no consoles in 10-15 years time, it will be pc gaming for everyone then, due to pc's being extremely powerful and a hell of a lot smaller. pc's will become the new consoles.

i think its almost impossible to do so, the programming is far too complicated. they should have had less SPU's and a better graphics card and memory.

I think you're right there but it won't be PCs, it will be dumb terminals or even a global functionality built in to your TV that allows you to play games over t'Internet. OnLive in other words. :)

both sony and ms have stated several times that they want the cycle to go on for another 4-5 years... most devs also agree and are happy with this. so its not really an unanswerable question as all the answers are out there already, theyv both made no secrets about this at all hence kinect and move.

cost is a big issue now, dev studios have massive overheads and theres so much expensive outsourcing its getting ridiculous - not to mention aswell the huge costs involved in R+D;ing a new console. gone are the days are 4-5 year consoles it just isnt realistic anymore.

so yeh get used to it because we are just over halfway through.
i havent got any problem with that -graphics are fine for me, its all about the gameplay and games like nfs hot pursuit, reach etc really show some amazing tech skills.

Well, the 360 was released a year before the PS3, so that might just about fit.

We are out of a recession, the PS3 was what £500 at launch, 360 was £300 and I sold one for £600 on ebay so people will pay a lot of money for a games consoles.

Another 5 years, no way, in 5 years we have gone from crappy 1st gen LCD tvs to LED 3D TVs and you think consumers will want the same graphics after TEN years, technology is always about pushing new boundaries at high costs. MS will be working on the new console now.

Better games, better graphics, better gaming engines, it takes developers years to get well polished games out.

I agree with the comments that the PS3 has more headroom. Of course this is my opinion, I'm no tech wizard, I just go by the fact that Uncharted 2 is probably the only game to come close to pushing the PS3 to its limits. So many other games just seem half arsed, because the devs aren't utilising the full potential of the PS3. Whereas I feel the xbox is operating close to its limits on most games.

Well i dont know about anyone else but im ready for a new gen of consoles now. We have had xbox 360 since 2005.

This last year i have found myself playing more PC games due to better graphics. Although these games have mostly been Console ports they are still starting to pull away abit from the console versions.

Mafia 2 is an example of this,

With move and kinect it looks they want to expand the life of the platform for at least 2 years, or at least until the hardware they want to make for PS4 and xbox 720 becomes cheaper to produce.

Hopefully soon! Say what you want, but consoles are holding PC graphics back.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of these 'PC gaming is dying!!!' people, it just seems that all the newer decent games come out primarily for consoles.

It makes sense really, it's where the money is as on average people's PCs are, well, crap.

I'm not that bothered, I have a PC for getting the best of the best visuals, I don't think the 360 and PS3 have started to age that badly yet anyway. PS3 has the upper hand on the 360 visually as some of its exclusives look fantastic.

Whaaaaaaat most games that are out on console are also on PC and for the most part the PC versions are better, rarely are they shoddy ports. Capcom make amazing PC versions of their games that whip the pants of the console versions and don't require high end hardware to run. Some good PC only games came out this year as well, Metro 2033 (a bit marmite), StarCraft II and Civilization V off the top of my head. :)

It's mostly just Sony's console games that don't see the light of day on the PC, a few 360 games haven't made appearances on PC but it's not a big deal, PC gamers didn't take to Halo or Gears of War when they came on PC first time around so I doubt they will now. Fable III is seeing a PC release though, oddly enough.

Even though Xbox 360/PS3 have been out 5/4 years respectively, I feel the juice hasn't been squeezed enought out of them particularly in the case of PS3 (I am a PS3 owner).
With PS1 and PS2 which lasted for more than 6-9 years, they had massive amount of good quality games and by the end of their reign, I felt a very very happy and a fully satisfied gamer that both PS1 and PS2 delivered a brilliant gaming platform.
Unfortunately I can't say the same thing about PS3. First of all there isn't much variety that PS3 has to offer and secondly there aren't many games on it compared to PS1 and PS2. May be this is due to the fact that modern console games involve a lot more complexities and require a lot more effort and time and thus we get only few games released per year.

PS3 still feels like a bloated jumbojet whose full potential is still yet to be realised with a large power hidden within, and which has taken a sort of backseat. Whereas PS1 and PS2 were the fast moving fighter jets of their era.

I am not damning PS3 but I do feel more diverse games need to be released on PS3 incorporating different genres and for this reason I reckon PS3 can last another 5 years:).

It's doubtful you will get much better than the visuals of Uncharted 2 out of the PS3, Killzone 3 looks barely any different than the second game which suggests they are at the moment reaching limits of some kind. Either that or they've had to cut it down because of them adding 3D support. (sigh)

Not really a bad thing because Uncharted 2 looked great, consoles have always been at the heels of the PC so I can easily see them lasting another few years. It's never been any different, at least now because they are running at a higher resolution the gap is smaller than before.

PS2 compared to PC for example was light years apart, 360 compared to PC is still dramatically in the PCs favour but it's not as big a difference as original, standard definition Xbox compared to PC.

i was pretty content with my pc but decided to get a ps3 slim 250 gig to compliment it late last year.

glad i waited this long to get one it let me buy loads of cheap/good games pretty fast, plus my sister has an old ps3 i played now and again :)

in a way i want this gen to last longer due to the fact i just got into it last year but at the same time i want a new console out as i feel the pc is been held back by them.

I think we could see more of a software update than a hardware one, lets see what direction MS is taking the xbox with its fall update.

Cheets I think you'll find that though enthusiasts make up a significant proportion of the market and the majority of the early adopters, the Wii has shown (as much as I hate what it stands for) that graphics and technology aren't the massive drivers we once thought they were.

Perhaps this is because we expect so much from our graphics these days, it's become too expensive to push the consoles to wring out those last few horsepower when only a few blockbusters a year make serious profit.
