Looking at making a raid 5 file server and noticed this lian li raid card. But i had a few questions for anyone who owns or has used one in raid 5. As i wasn't able to find much information googling the card.

1. First is this really a hardware raid card? It seems to be rather low price compared to the other hardware cards that do raid 5.

2. Does it have a maximum array size? Noticed some cheaper cards have a limit.

3. Does it support expanding of the array once created? e.g. if i made a 4 disk array then added another disk without having to store data elsewhere and reassemble the array. Also similarily when upgrading by swapping disks one at a time for larger disks.

Hope someone can help thanks :)

The card appears to be a bog standard JMicron based RAID card with a whacking margin applied to the cost by Lian Li. As such there's no proper hardware support for RAID5 parity calculations.

In short, there are better or cheaper alternatives out there.

Sorry for the thread necro, but what better or cheaper alternatives should be considered?
