Car for 17 Year Old?

I disagree, when looking at a 520d and a 530i tax shouldn't come on to it. On a mega cheap run around the extra £165pa would make a fair amount of difference. £200pa tax could cost more than the depreciation, £35 would not! With my first car by far and away the biggest cost per year was tax

Tax cost you more than insurance and fuel?

Assuming that actually happens that is, for me an old 1.8D (non turbo iirc) Mondeo was a good few hundred more to insure than a Polo 1.4 16v and I know which one I preferred.

I think this idea behind a big car like a Mondeo being cheaper to insure is a bit of a myth. I can understand the logic behind it but i'm yet to find anyone who has actually had cheaper quotes.

No such thing as a non turbo diesel mondeo, regardless of age.

It's not a myth, it's just misunderstood. For a start, most mainstream insurers and comparison sites will return higher prices. It's when you start talking to the specialists that you will see a difference. It also doesn't work for everyone, certainly worked for me - larger, less cool cars were always considerably cheaper to insure.

Finally, even of it's not specifically cheaper, it's about value for money rather than direct cost. If you can insure a mondeo for 1500 and a fiesta for 1200, od have the mondeo every single time.

I'm far from being an expert but check out the tax on the car before buying so you can add that into the equation!

My fiesta flight 1.3 is now £100 for 6 months, whereas my friend pays £35ish for the year (206 hdi 1.4).

I'd glady pay £100 a week, nevermind a year!, if it would mean I could avoid driving a woeful pug 1.4 hdi :p

You can get a 02 onwards shape Fiesta for that money. The engines in them are fantastic. I had one for 4 years, nothing ever went wrong with it.

Just avoid the 1.3 Endura engine.

This was the point i was trying to get at.

On a side note. For both fiesta's (P and 02 reg) i've owned the MoT (had 3) has usually set me back around the £200-500 mark. But i guess thats just down to luck, unless you know what to look for!

I see fuel more as a variable cost, however insurance was slightly more. Sorry.

It is indeed variable, but it's still a cost associated with the car, but that's a good reason why tax should be nearly bottom of the list in assessing costs.

- the right choice in fuel economy could save you hundreds or thousands
- insurance, likewise
- maintenance costs could cost you hundreds more than they need to if you make the wrong choice

The saving by looking for a car with cheap tax is significantly less than any of the above, so in my eyes it goes at the bottom

Oddball....

A friend of mine had just given his 17year old daughter one of his old cars, a 1994 730i BMW!

Apparently it cost less for her to insure than the Mini One that his wife runs, so she's in the 7.

I dread to think what she spends on fuel & repairs though!

They live in Cumbria - is this why the BM's insurance was relatively cheap for her? - circa £1100 iirc

Its probably because there has never been another 17 year old driving a 730 so there is literally no insurance risk profile :D

Maybe that's how to do it, catch them off guard. Get a tank or a milk float.... Or a pink micra cc

2003 1.4 Fiesta for my first car and loving it, Passed my test 3 months ago, Had my first bump a month ago ;)
