Virgin Media 100Mb Service

The dlink dir 615 supports around 150mbit wan to lan so my guess is just future proofing for 100. Also as far as I know they are keeping all current packages and then adding 100.
My wireless connects at 300Mbps, never monitored the throughput but meh. Can anyone confirm if I can get away with just keeping my current 50meg modem and whatever router I want to use? I don't know if it's me just being dopey but I don't understand bulldog147's post...

Yes you can keep your current modem.

I want it, but I bearly use my 20Mbps connection (above is hour average).

Essentially he is saying:

If you have a 50Mb modem but dont use the supplied router = Activation fee and no engineer visit fee, and use your existing router.

If you have a 50Mb modem and use the supplied router = Activation fee and a super hub sent to (I guess) swap with the supplied router. This seems a waste to me.

If you want a superhub = Activation and engineer visit fee for engineer to come and swap the kit out.

Personally, if the 50Mb modem is up to the job then I'll be happy to keep it and use my existing routing solution. I'm using the WNR2000 as an access point until I get a wireless N card fitted into my router, then I'll send it back to VM. I'll not be happy if I'm forced to use the superhub as both the modem and router if the initial reports about it are true.

Amazing but the most important thing not mentioned or I missed it, whats it like with caps/throttles etc ?

if there offering 100meg, surely during the day time its capped very low and is it unlimited downloads ?

50mb is uplimited downloads i'm actually having to wait to reinstall all my games because if i have to download them all again on 10mb steam it'll be 1.2mbs for 3gig then the 200gig will go at 300kb/s and take me a month... ith 50mbs i can download it all in 1 night.

Sweet, Currently on 50mb as it won’t be much more in price to get the 100mb with 10mb upload speed I’m defiantly getting it, And it seems my area(South-East) is one of the first to get the upgrade :D:D:D

Signed up, waiting for the email!

The 50mb doesn’t have caps/throttles, so I would imagine it'll be the same for the 100mb package

I think it is ridiculous. Why would someone, other than a pirate, would want that kind of speed.

I for one value ping/latency more than max speed limit.

I'm just curious to see which one server anyone will be able to get 100Mb off without running multiple threads. I'm going to go with the "multiple people in a house" (excuse) reason.

I'm sceptical that something like this won't have a knock on effect to the quality of the network on the whole. I can see some people, like students for example, hammering this for all it's worth.

It most definately will. My local CMTS was upgraded to 2Mb/s upload recently, and since then the internet has been completely ****ed.

I could literally see the moment my modem was updating itself and from EXACTLY that point onwards the internet has been broken. I even checked the logs to double check and it's definitely the reason it's ****ed up.

VM have been having problems with over subscription in our area which has meant that the the internet has been unusable since signing up for the 20mb service in August. They said they will fix the issue in Mid November, which is 3 months of disruption.

I'm wondering why they don't sort out all the niggling issues with their existing services before moving on to the 100mb service! I'm sure it will have an effect of the quality of the network, the infrastructure is pretty poor.

Because most areas are fine.
