Virgin Media 100Mb Service

And at ~10MB/sec the 12am-5pm time you could download awesome amounts of Linux Distros over NNTP as well :p

You should still be able to do that.

The question is - can I disable its router functionality, not will they make me have it in the first place.

And WTF at your second comment? Just cause it goes over an indicated 50Mb every so often, doesn't mean it'll support 100Mb down / 10Mb up.

The VM 50Mb modems, can support speeds up and over 250Mb, they just dont stop at 50Mb...They were built for the faster networks.
There are some Trads about...

I'm starting to wonder if people develop these "Linux Distros" somewhere cold, because whenever people talk about them they're always coughing :(

usenet is only place which you can download full speed of 100mb

grabit - full auto download and par/unrar, write to 4.7GB DVD, all of that in 20 mins, i do this while cooking dinner. watch DVD while eat dinner is good :)

so i dont think i'll upgrade to 100mb, not needed

That'll be why the 100Mb network requires a new modem then .

What do you mean by this? That's utter BS.

The new 100MB modem is the modem/router in one isn't it, the Superhub hence the requirement?

I'm thinking of upgrading purely for the upstream, trying to do 5-10gb upload for offsite backup takes a while at 512kbps but the server I'm uploading to does 100/100.

It is although as another user posted the current modems should be able to support higher speed I don't know if they would have overheating problems or not but I would say they could handle 100 no problem. The supplied dir 615 on the other hand does not have gigabit ethernet so your max speed would always be under 100mbit/s. I'm also 99.99% sure that the new modem/routers can have the router functionality disabled and from what I have heard about the docsis 2 hubs you will be wanting to use your own router.

Just to clear something up if you have the current 50Mbit modem (the black curvy one) then it supports speed way in excess of 100Mbit/s and the ethernet interface on it supports Gigabit.

I would imagine that forcing you to upgrade to a new integraded modem/router would be expensive for them and would surely put a lot of people off given the cost to the end user. I know that the majority of current routers out there sadly do not support Gigabit on the WAN port unless it's pretty damn new or pretty high end.

VM300 Cable Modem 12.01 Firmware Update on 29-09-2010 20:42

We've just released the new 12.01 firmware update for VM300 Cable Modems across our network.

The new firmware was tested over the past 8 weeks with 2000 customers including volunteers from this forum and we've seen no significant issues in testing.

The new firmware enables 100Mbps throughput for our forthcoming 100Mbps service and is also designed to improve upstream stability and throughput. It also turns back on the TDOX feature that was switched off in July with the 10.12 firmware, due to a bug affecting performance.

If you'd like to upgrade now you can load the new firmware by turning your modem on and off.

Please post any feedback you have about the new firmware in this thread.

Thanks

Anyone who DOES NOT have the 50Mb at the moment WILL need the SuperHub.
But if you have the 50Mb link already, your 50MB VM300 modem will be able to cope with the 100Mb link.

Wish people would Google things before posting the wrong info...

If you do a lot of uploading between 9am and 9pm you get a nasty letter from Virgin.

I should know :(

Are the price correct if I upgrade from my current XXL 50 meg, talk unlimited with line rental at £45.24 per month will increasing to just £55.24 for XXXL 100 meg (£10 extra) ?

I cap my torrent upload during the day as my home server is on 24/7, no letters in the ~2 months it's been running so far. My problem is offsite backups, uploading just takes too long and I'd like more security than just sticking the data on dvd's/externals.
