Unusual diesel issue?

I have just done a delivery in Milton Keynes, pulling onto Standing Way (A421 iirc) I noticed my truck seemed to be pulling really really well, they always seem to pull well after you have lost the 27ton load that you were pulling previously tbh, but this was very different.

The engine note seemed wrong, I had an emission warning light on and the truck was throwing out clouds of black soot - unburnt fuel?

I pulled over, switched off, restarted and it seems happy again, no light, no more smoke etc etc.

I just wonder what would cause such a thing? any ideas?

I want to put in a defect report when I get back to the depot, but am a bit puzzled what to put - no decent fault description, the fitters won't touch it. :(

Probably just some random EDC - electronic diesel control - issue. Electronics screwing up I imagine...

perhaps it re-mapped itself briefly?

Anybody?
 
Sounds like it was over-fueling a lot, might just have been a sticky throttle position sensor or boost compensator, or something in the electronics, especially as she was fine after the restart.

I watched it last night because the F1 bit was quite interesting.

The rest was hilariously bad - they've basically just ripped the Ice Road Truckers format, right down to the map thing which shows you where they are going - and then thought it would be just as exciting watching a Tesco delivery on the M1 as it is watching somebody haul 100 tonnes across sheet ice.

Quite agree.

What has surprised me is Channel 5 is supposedly delighted with the viewing figures and are in negotiation with Stobart for a 2nd series!!!

I just hope series 2 is a bit more accurate than the first.
 
That program really does nothing to help my stereotypical image of a "truck driver" :( I find some of it interesting though and i will admit to have watched the series :p

I agree with that too - that said, you should see some of the guys I work with !!!! ;)

Interestingly, after a few bits of "bad practice" highlighted by the show - some of the featured drivers have now left the company.

loved how they hired a stobart for transporting a £3million F1 car last night too... surely this isnt the norm?

It is when you have had an f1 transport contract for the last few years as Stobart have.........

Didnt you bother listening? :p

Stobart have the contract to operate the truck fleet - the silver Mercedes GP trucks are run by Stobart as well.

They are an F1 team not a haulage firm, so they leave haulage to the experts.

Its called picking up bad habits, everyone does something when driving that they shouldn't. Sometimes you just do these things without thinking about it, have you never had a drink from a soft drink whilst driving, you know you shouldn't but just do it. It could always be an unmarked police car behind or beside you when you do them.

Indeed, trouble is, the drivers in question are supposed professionals, in charge of 44ton trucks, you can't take chances in such a vehicle, especially with a film crew in your cab!

I'm very glad that I turned down the chance to be in the show....

It annoys me though, I feel that the show has painted ESL in a poor light, standards there are extremely high, much better than for other hauliers I have worked for, editing seems to paint a diffferent picture alas.
