I purchased MW2 via ebay, won the auction and the seller has emailed me his steam username and password for me to start using it, does this seem odd?

He said just so I can get on and play it asap and will send the Disc out Monday, which is fair enough. But why email me his username and password? Dodgy?

Isn't this something to do with the game being registered to his Steam Account? Doesn't this mean that even once you get the discs you will always need to login to his Steam Account to play it?

No, it is a used copy, I can see why he would do it in a sense...but another seems dodgy...i might just wait ? whats in it for him?

You are aware the game is tied to a steam account right? So even the very act of buying the damn thing already tied to an account is dodgy... its not even remotely hard to get it back and pretend it was hacked. Slippery slope since its only 1 step from you proving it was sold illegally and the account getting closed.

Oh, is this true?

I'm no Steam expert myself but I'm sure I read a story a few days ago on another forum where someone had bought Left 4 Dead and it had already been activated, it might be possible to transfer ownership but again I'd think there are people on here more knowledgeable than me!

yeah the game needs to be registered to a steam account and once it has been its always tied to those login details and his personal information.
its not allowed by valve either tbh and you may have issues if the guy just does a password reset for instance and claims the account back

He can then claim that u hacked his account and get it back to him. Have fun playing MW2 while it lasts. He could have used hacks a few months back and the ban is imminent and he could have stole the account from someone else.

Its also against the steam eula to sell an account.

Sorry to be the one to call doom.;)

Quick, get on his steam account and change his password!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

just kidding but it sounds dodgy...

Worth bearing in mind that buying and selling Steam account is against their policy, I'm reasonably sure that they can disable account if they find out.

But that is the only way you will get a copy of MW2 on the PC second hand. Its tied to whatever Steam account it was registered with forever, I've never known of it being untethered.

yes.. claiming back the account is something he could do.. but then you would be able to raise the issue with ebay and get your money back that way. Chances are he only had the one game attached to the account and decided to sell it.

If you want the game second hand this is the only way to do it.

The likelihood he'd try to claim it back if its the only game on the account are slim, since you can easily get your money back. The more likely occurance is that he's been banned by VAC. It could be a pending ban but i think VAC bans a lot faster these days so he'd never sell it in time.

I'd just ask him if MW2 was the only game on the account, if it was, cool he's basically just handing over his account, change the details ect ect

:)

I wouldn't touch it - if you log in Steam will have your IP and if he reports anything bang - there goes your own Steam account (if you have one.)

Not worth the risk.

If he only gave you the username and password, and he authenticaded the account to his email address, all he needs to do is a password reset. There's no way for you to change the password as it sends him an email with details, but he could change the password and there's nothing you could do.

It could be legit... but it could also not be. Afterall, who has a steam account just for MW2? Most people have bought at least a couple of games mega cheaply.
