Just seen a post in the MM.

The guy is selling his amp so he can get a Sony, just because it will match the rest of his system.

Is it only me who finds this absolutely ridiculous? Don't get me wrong, Sony make some good stuff, but surely the sound quality should be the main factor when buying a receiver?

Dont agree, the sound quality to most is the same over pretty much everything half decent. I'd buy on features and aesthetics personally.

Yes

So you would sell a perfectly good receiver, only to buy a new one because it says Sony on the front?

Yeah, if I was some one who cared about things looking the same.

I'm not by the way, but I understand some people are like that so it doesn't bother me when they do it.

whats wrong with caring about looks ?

As long as he's not buying something that sounds carp just because it looks good.

You can have looks + sound quality at the same time.

Personal preference really, personally I don't care too much about how an amp looks, more how it sounds. In fact one of my amps is in a metal coffee tin and it sounds great! :p

Other people seem to prefer things that look nice, even if they don't perform as well...

Unless he's buying it out of my wallet, let him do what he wants.

Just means there's a perfectly decent amp going into the preowned market now he's replacing it.

If someone asks for advice, i give it and let them make their own decisions. I learnt long ago not to try and convince people to do things or follow my advice. Besides, if he fits his new amp and is happy with it and listens to it more just because it's new and more importantly enjoys the experience then i don't see how it's anything other than a positive thing.

He's replacing a perfectly good product for another one so the badges are the same.

That isn't the same as buying something because you like the look of it.

Yes but if you look at how much he paid for the sony one and then look at how much he is asking for his old one there is virtually nothing in it. Providing he gets asking price.

but it wont be just the badge will it ?

The sony range has the Bravia Sync which enables you to use the amp to control all your sony devices from the receiver remote negating the need for an all in one remote.

Plus one touch switches everything on, your TV, your receiver, and your player.

The sony receivers arent bad receivers, and to have it match the rest of your kit in colour too, would be quite nice i reckon. Plus the sonys OSD with the XMB interface is rather good too. It wont be just about the badge ...

I used to have all Sony gear until my then Sony AV receiver went pop (twice). I bought another one but that put me off Sony AV hardware since. My AV hardware hasn't been the same make since then either.

sounds silly, ok has advantage that 1 remotet can control everything so saves having a couple of remotes.
i'm currently running with:
Sony TV
Onkyo amp
Pioneer blu-ray
Energy speakers
so a complete mash up, it sounds good, looks good and I like it which is all I care about

I think its a lot nicer to have all matching components, when it comes to hi-fi separates/ audio components. Whilst I don't have all matching myself, given the choice I would. Besides iv always thought that audio components from the same manufacturer sound better with each other than others, obv. Not always true but often.

all depends on my AV set up , my current set up is all on show in the living room so everything from sub to reciever is all black, if the stuff was hidden away colour etc wouldnt matter and quality and price would

ive mix'd and matched my system think its a much better way to go,, unless u can afford to buy a full B&W System or summit :S

I think mine is probably the craziest mis match....

AOC TV
Yamaha AV Amp
SilverStone HTPC Case
....
Quad 33/303 Combo
Sony CDP

Speakers:
Acoustic Energy front,
Mission centre
Kef rears!

PS heres what the Quad stuff looks like in case you didn't know...

I bought it all second hand apart from the TV and the HTPC case, i dread to think how much it would have cost to buy new!
