Cobras should have either a beautifully built and detailed, preferably period, straight six (if you're going for more of an 'Ace' styled one) or a V8.

And a manual box.
 
My mates got an old XJS engine in his, iv no idea what kit it was but it is a cobra.

Anyway more is better, im sure of that :)
 
I had a hard enough time trying to convince him it needed something bigger than the 1.8 out his MG!
 
Don't get me wrong, the V12's a sound engine but with a maximum output of 'only' 300bhp in 6.0 HE versions (and a more typical 250 for others), usually single-figure economy and the fact they're big and expensive to rebuild and tune, they soon get walked over by small-block V8s and well-tuned sixes.

So explain how an 80's/90's Bimmer straight 6 is 'period'?. The one reason everyone loves the Cobra is the fact AC dumped the original engine when they couldn't sell the things and fitted a V8.

A complete car or engine? Real Steel sell 'cut out' V8's for about £400 quid a pop, no guarantee though:

Usually plenty of 305s or 350s drifting around on eBay for in the region of £300-600, too. For example there's one on eBay from a breakers, delivered, in working condition (305) for £450. Bit steep but looks a solid engine.

302 Ford V8s are equally available in a similar price range but....they're Ford engines. You may get shot.

For example there was a decent 305 needing a rebore and rebuild for £150 - complete rebuild kit is £350, sorted! :D

There's the venerable Rover V8 as well but depends on what output and performance you want. Light, though.

Manual gearboxes, ancilleries and accessories will soon send your budget spiralling, though (unless you go for a Rover).

The kit specifically mentions the Rover V8, doesnt need to be massive output.
 
You can usually put together a 200bhp / 230ft.lb RV8 for a relatively sensible price - and the LT77 5-speed manual box is pretty decent too.

Get a nice 3.5 or 3.9, aluminium intake, Edelbrock or Weber 4-barrel, decent ignition system and a cam and it should go well, make the right noises too.

You could even use the factory EFi if you want to :)


All aluminium too, so will handle pretty decently and not stress the chassis too much.
 
rover v8 on carbs simple and will suit the car perfectly. you have to be soft in the head to even think about a bmw engine for this.
 
I would probably look at an all aluminium or magnesium jobby for a ligthweight kit car. Although priced probably out of your price range, an N52 would be good. In a Z4 3.0Si the N52 produced 265 BHP and sounds great.

Although an old engine now, the S14 from the first generation M3 would work great in a lightweight kit-car, but talking £2000 upwards and it's an I4 rather than an I6

Not sure of engine codes but maybe an I6 2.8 from the E46 or E46. Or an S50 or S52 from E36 M3, again talking more than £500 though
 
I'd avoid ones out of Range Rovers because they tend to be low compression ratio (8.1:1) engines.

I'd try and find one out of an SD1, usually 9.35:1.

If you want more, P5B V8's run 10.5:1 so need good fuel but are usually the most potent of the 'standard' models.

Matt-Page, Rover's probably as light, if not lighter, than those :D Rev pretty well if set up for it too.
