Clearing away your own rubbish.

I've never worked in a cinema, but I struggle to believe 90% of people leave their waste behind.

I don't. I work in a bingo club and you ought to see the state of it at the end of the night. That's despite having the cleaners go round 3 times.

Or just walk around town and see how many people just drop whatever rubbish is in their hand regardless of bins. There are bins every 10 yards in the town centre and many people still drop everything on the floor, even when they're walking past a bin at the time.

Many people just don't give a damn.

Why don't you just display a message on the screen before the film?

"please take your **** out with you when you leave, saves me having to do some work"

That would be useless. The people who would pay any attention to the message would already be using the bins.

Because it £7-8 a ticket + £££ for the food, drink etc and not having to worry about rubbish is one of the reasons people pay to go to the cinema. Same way as you don't wash up if you go out for a meal.
Do you guys who are saying it's the OPs job to clean up after you also leave your trays on the table in fastfood restaurants?
Yes

I used to think this before i worked there... And its not true! We're usually understaffed and have around 5-15 minutes to clean a screen, which is simply not possible if the screen previously sold out (330 seats).

330 seats rakes in about £2145 (going by my locals ticket prices and that's not including the extortionate food/beverage prices), you'd think they would be able to pay an extra couple of people's wages if they only have 15 mins to clean up before the next film.

Blame the cinema for being tight tbh.

If the prices were more reasonable do you think the same people would still do it?

And in response to not washing up, if you had a meal at a restaurant (which charge just as much on drinks/sides) the difference is you don't walk within arms reach of the kitchen sink unlike the numerous bins = D

Edit: After reading my OP i may have come across arrogant and/or lazy... Not my intention!

I'd be quite happy to give up my job if this was the case, but we're not employed just to clean this would not happen.

The cinema could employ less people though, if no time was wasted cleaning.

Currently the choice to cinemas is employ enough people to do all the chores required, or have a dirty (or another deficiency) cinema. If the cinema doesn't have to worry about cleaning as much, then employing less people becomes that much easier.

edit:

I clean my rubbish, force of habit. I don't see it as some moral duty at a cinema though. I do think dropping rubbish on the floor is petty though.

I work part time in a cinema and don't understand why 90% of the people leave their rusbbish spread out on the floor, in the cup holders or stuffed down the back of the seat despite there being 18 bins.

Do you do it when out?! If not... Reconsider.

Thanks.

ok here is the thing...both you and people in this thread are right in a different way. There are plenty of countries, both in and outside Europe, where people are way "cleaner" than in Britain and I dont just mean for cinemas but all public places. Even usual "troublemakers" for rubbish such as kids would get pretty bad experience if they get caught littering but few would do anything like that anyway because of their different upbringing. Some countries that I visited in eastern Europe would also appear to be less tidy but then it turns out its mostly not because people are messy but because their local authorities have almost next to nothing in cleaning budget compared to what the British ones splash on it and it would be dreadful to think of how will the latter fare in similar circumstances if the littering habits of people remain the same.

On the other hand, as in the case of the cinemas, its just plain wrong to charge those extortionist prices for food/drinks and this make even me feel like leaving a mess behind myself(though I still havent had the heart to do it). Similar thing could be said about the level of council tax which makes many people accept a stance that they pay enough to act however they want.

Well it's not exactly fun walking out after the film only to be stepping in/on random crap till the aisle.
If you leave a drink the cup holder etc though i see no issue.

You should be glad these people leave a mess gives you a reason to be at work earning money. Suck it up and get on with it.

i'm no litter bug but in the cinema I usually leave mine because everyone else does :p

that and there are no bins and after paying £4 for crap popcorn I like to get my monies worth.

Exactly..

When i pay £5 for a regular size box of fresh, stale, popcorn i get my monies worth by making sure i spill it, rip the box into tiny annoying little pieces and confetting the floor with it.

Its not the likes of me that charge those prices. And those that do, don't clean up rubbish.

Personally, i would take in my own food and drink.

So you want people to stop littering and to stop buying the food and drink from your cinema and bring their own, why not just hand in your notice now, may aswell leave the fire escape open so people can watch the films for free aswell.

To a certain degree, its messy and rude to leave rubbish but on the other hand, people often have all the bins outside the big heavy doors and its fairly inconvinient to carry a whole bunch of rubbish though a heavy door with lots of people in the way, while its easier for the staff, with a bin bag, walk through and pick it all up.

That being said, I don't often go, the only film I bothered to see in the cinema in the past year or so was at a cinema I'd never been, I didn't know where the bins where, I didn't specifically spot any on the way in and didn't want to end up carrying crap everywhere. We also got the "fancy" seat tickets and my brother kept going back for the free Nacho's so we had an ackward amount of stuff, no idea where the bins where and had paid through the teeth for the seats.

It's worth noting that the cinema usually doesn't make any money from ticket sales. It's really expensive to buy the rights to show a film commercially.

I used to work at Alton Towers and the amount of rubbish left by customers makes a messy cinema not look so bad!

Not sure why people do it, they may just not care or may be they think that for £36 (or whatever it is now) entry fee they expect people to clean up for them.

That said, the only times I leave rubbish is when I am at the Cinema, but there are never any bins to put it in! I try and jam all my stuff into the cupholder so at least the cleaner has easy access.
I bet it is a right PITA cleaning up after chavs who have had a popcorn fight.

There are never any bins big enough to put the things in anyway....

I tend to leave my drink and any other wrappers inside the popcorn tub and put it ontop of the seat when I leave.

I figure it makes it easy to pick up, and leave the floor clear for other people leaving. It never even crossed my mind about taking it out. If there were large bins by the entrance/exit to the screens, or smaller ones on the seat rows then stuff would get binned. However, the designers of the cinema want to squeeze as many seats in as possible, and pay you pick it up, as its cheaper.

Another thing to consider is that the first thing people do when they leave the cinema is go to the loo. People are not likely to leave, take rubbish with, take it to the loo, then take it to a bin.
