how amazing is team fortress 2 !!

For me its the emphasis on teamwork that I enjoy. You get points as a medic for healing people while they kill - unlike, say MW2, where you aren't rewarded for taking out aircraft so not many people bother.

The variety of the classes means that if I'm finding the game boring, I just switch class and it soon becomes fun again. For instance, I enjoy playing medic, but if I find I'm dying lots then I can switch to pyro for some unadulterated killing - a completely different experience to the medic.

The fact the scoreboard shows your 'score' and not your 'kills' (and deaths) means I am not constantly worried about my K/D ratio (which I was in MW2) and I actually enjoy the game more, its far less frustrating.

The weapon drops keep you hooked as well. Every so often a new item will drop and you can equip it to a particular class. This encourages you to use that class for a while.

The number of statistics that it has also interest me. E.g., number of invuls while medic, number of sentry kills as engie etc etc.

I admit, some games can feel frantic, especially if you're new to the game. My advice is to play as medic and follow someone who is high on the board (and a useful class - HWG, Pyro, Soldier etc) and see where they go, what they do etc... you also get points for doing that as well :-p

People don't care if you suck. Just frikkin' buy it.

If it is a team game as its name implies, I don't believe that. But regardless, what do you DO in the game?

BTW I already own it, I got it in the Orange Box years ago. I loaded it once, it looked confusing and that was it.

Reinstalled TF2 about 3-4 weeks ago, and I just can't find a server that isn't full of bots. Seems there's more bots than actual players and they aren't that easy to spot at first either. Really spoling the game for me.

Here's some servers for you that don't have bots, and have a good established community with regulars.

INX - 85.234.148.30:27050 (you'll find me here 90% of the time I'm on TF2)
Hampshire Heavies #1 - 217.146.85.240:27015
#2 - 217.146.85.241:27015
#3 - 217.146.85.240:27035
#4 - 217.146.85.240:27045
Trigger happy gamers - 89.145.117.74:27025
Toy Fort Clanofdoom - 89.145.94.21:27015 (very fun maps)
Toy Fort CEUK - 217.163.27.141:27015 (more toy fort)

Add these to your favourite and you'll always have somewhere to play.

the latest update has ruined it for me, i wont play this game again now.

The entirety of the update is the new map. Don't play the new map and the update doesn't affect anything. I don't understand how 1 new map could ruin a game?

You can either play deathmatch/arena, which is self explanatory. There's attack/defend control points - one team has to capture a point by standing on it and the other team has to defend (there's usually 2-5 control points on each map). Neutral control points - 2 teams start with 2 control points and there's 1 middle control point both teams try to capture; once you capture the middle you have to then capture the enemy team's 2 points they already have.

There's also payload which is also attack/defend - attacking team has a cart that you have to stand next to to push it, and the objective is to get it to the other end of the map. The defending team has to stop you of course. There's also payload race, where both teams have a cart and you have to stop your opponents pushing theirs while pushing yours at the same time. The race maps where the carts are falling backwards and eventually off the end of the map if left untouched for too long are amazingly fun.

TF2 is so great because of the class diversity and skill ceiling. There's so many ways to play the game depending on how you normally play FPS games. And believe it or not the game is incredibly competitive. The competitive TF2 scene is actually amazing to watch, the skill level is ridiculous.

Why would I play TF2 deathmatch over say COD MW?

Because they're entirely different. COD is realistic, and the majority of the time whoever sees each other first wins the fight. TF2 is more arcadey. For example, if you're soldier and you're fighting a scout it's very hard for the scout to win this fight. It's completely down to the scouts movement and aiming - you have to deceive the soldier into wasting rockets shooting in a direction he thinks you're going to move, then going in the other direction. As soldier you have to be able to predict the scouts movement and aim your rockets accordingly. And don't think because it's a rocket launcher it's easy to aim, predicting movement is much harder than aiming a hitscan weapon imo.

Watch this vid that Bones posted here the other day. It gives you a good idea what TF2 gameplay is like when played well. I much prefer this type of gameplay to realistic shooters.

I've watched a number of TF2 videos to try and 'get' the big deal about it. I must be missing how it is better in any way than say COD MW or UT2004?

Semi-realistic shooter = COD or CSS
Over the top shooter = UT2004

I can't see why I would want to play TF2 over them unless someone can explain it.

It's not necessarily better, it's just different. Why can't you grasp that lol. I prefer TF2s style of gameplay, others prefer COD and Unreal.

Unreal and Quake are more like TF2 than COD is. Unreal and Quake both require a ridiculous amount of aiming and movement skill. TF2 does too, but not so much. It's mostly teamwork based - the difference between a division 3 and a division 1 team for example is entirely teamwork based, not necessarily individual skill.

Its clear from your questions that you don't seem to like the concept of the game, why bother with all the questions? If you find a game fun and enjoyable play it, if you ask numerous questions trying to get people to convince you to play it, it probably isn't for you. It's not like its a game with completely unique gameplay features that need explaining, its just a team & asymmetric class focused multiplayer shooter (with hats).

I used to love TF2 when it was first released, but they have raped it...

It seems like an MMO now, I started it up yesterday for the first time in months and was greeted by some sort of shop window trying to sell me game items lol.

I just disconnected, sadly the death of one of the best FPS in history.
