LG 50" PK590 - first impressions.

If you have the "hours timer" in the menu then you have old firmware ... personally I would update to the latest firmware as it is supposed to fix the dreaded "undefeatable sharpening" and slightly poor blacks on this model.

Im going to upgrade the firmware on mine once i know ive done 100hours.

I have watched quite a few blurays running from my PC on this TV and its amazing. I also played a bit of F1 2010 from my PC to the TV and was really good :D

Hey guys, i just gone ahead and brought one of these from online.

Now this would be my first plasma, coming from a 4 year old LCD samsung.

What do i need to know about looking after it?

I have already picked up on running the set in what does that involve?

Can anyone post some settings for this for when i first get it

Appreciate it guys

Set the settings to expert, this will unlock the finer options.

Set everything to medium, 50 contrast, 50 brightness etc.

Leave it like that for 100 hours.

Also don't leave sky/dvd on pause and try and keep away from gaming for the time being.

Im on around 50 hours now and i have noticed IR has gone down to a bare minimum.

When i first got it, if i plugged my pc in and left the desktop on for as little as 10 seconds the background would be there for about a minute or so.

This has now stopped as far as i can see, i also played f1 2010 and did one race for around 40mins and there was no sign of IR what so ever :D.

TBH all panels are different and it might be pointless changing the settings unless you are ACTUALLY getting IR - personally I would stick it on the THX Cinema mode and take care not to leave any static images onscreen for more than a couple of hours at a time for the first month or so.

Some people run break in slides and what not but depends what road you want to go down ...:D

Had this screen for a few weeks now, and for around 630 quid it performs incredibly well. Small amount of IR, base is a dust magnet, and for some reason my harmony remote has been really tricky to set up - the harmony settings for the tv dont match the actual remote. Minor stuff; by far the best tv/value out there at the moment.

Not sure how to describe this, on the right side you have the bezel but also a black strip its as if its missing a column of pixels but when looking close, there are none, is this just a large bezel? as its a bit odd one side is bigger than the other. Hope i dont have a faulty set here

I am this ...' ' close to buying this TV in it's 60' flavour. Can get it for £999 on a trade in. I'm not a massive enthusiast and coming from a 4 year old 32', I think I'm in for a treat :p

It does this on some channels when you have the tv set on just scan, put it on 16:9 and it'll get rid of it ;)

Get a box of tissues ready because your going to start fapping.

Been playing MW2 (one of the few 1080p games on the ps3), and noticed no lag at all. And thats not even on the dedicated 'game' setting, so you should be fine.

How does this screen compare to the Panny G20 and V20 sets? Any comparative reviews anyone please?

Personally I dont think its anywhere near as good as either but thats just my personal prefrence. I looked at this TV a lot when I bought my new set a month ago. Went to see it in several different shops and in every one I just found the picture lacking in depth and black levels compared to the pannys. For the price though it is a very good TV.

In the end i plumped for the V20 which I very happy with but it ended up costing pretty much twice the price on the PK590 but when I saw them next to each other I felt it was worth the price.

Pleaase also bear in mind though that there are quite a few 'common faults' with the new pannys. just read all the threads at AV forums. It seems I was one of the lucky few in that mine doesnt seem to have many of them, and the ones it does they are barely noticable. Quite a few people are having some major issues with buzzing, posterisation, flashing backs to name a few. And Panasonic isnt being any help what so ever on the issues. This alone has given many people enough concern to skip Pannasonic TVs until they get there act together.

I bought my V20 from a supplier that offered a no quibbles 30 day return policy for a full refund. That way if I couldnt live with the issues then I would have just sent it back. It still took me pretty much a month to click that 'Buy' button though. the more I read the more it put me off, but then every time I saw one in a shop I wanted to buy it again :p

It seems there is no perfect TV, every TV these days has its faults. Its finding one for the price you want to pay that has a picture your happy with and faults you can live with. Sad but true, the days of buying a TV that worked perfectly are long gone when CRTs went :(

... sums it up in a nutshell

still can't make my mind up .... one minute its Panasonic plasma then Im back to Sony LCD ... then LG then ...

Hmm, cheers for the info Kidloco.

I really like the sound of the V20, but my problem is that I cant find anywhere in my area that sells it, or has it on display; everyone has the G20 and VT20 only. Kinda not sure on buying something that I have not seen in the flesh, so to speak.

There seems to be a lot of buzz about this particular LG though, hence my asking.

Cheers for your help!

Ditto. I know I couldn't live with any sort of IR, so I'm leaning back towards an LCD (which Sony do you have in mind).

I just know I don't want to have to endlessly worry about sticking the virgin box on schedule viewer and getting up to do something else and forget about it, play games etc etc

However the amount of TV you get for the money with the LG is soooo tempting.

Ive had mine nearly a month now, im very happy with mine, im extremely fussy about my tv's (ive had about 15 plasmas and lcd's over the past 4 or 5 years).

I cant really recommend it highly enough.
