Should prisoners get the vote?

I can't see why not. After all, I don't think losing the right to vote is even the remotest of concerns for people weighing up whether or not a crime is worth the risk.

Hypothetically speaking would the right to vote extend to prisoners being allowed to vote on a national referendum for prison reform?

Only if they send back the stupid Electoral Roll form every year like the rest of us have to, otherwise it's a criminal offence, and....... oh wait

They are discussing this on Radio2 at the moment. Got some liberal speaking total nonsense. They shouldn't have the vote, as they shouldn't be able to sue because they have to slop out.

The way I see is we live in a democratic society so it is important for people to vote, however it is equally important that you respect and contribute to that society which a criminal has not done.

If we assume for arguments sake that denying ones freedom is a viable form of punishment then that denial should extend to the right to vote. Im surprised how neutral a lot of people I've spoken to have been about it. I dont know why but I feel strongly about this!

Prisoners should lose their human rights, and any other rights for that matter, the moment they are found guilty and start their sentence!

Why has this even been considered? It's ridiculous!

yes/no.

In a system like ours no, although I don't like the idea of that.
However I think we should have an Australian version. Where everyone legally has to vote.
Atm it leaves it wide open for vocal minorities to make far to much influence on the government.
which is also why protests should be ignore, you have say 10k protesting and how about the other 60million, do they support you or not. Just because you are vocal does not mean you have the backing of the public.

No

But you can have a PlayStation, TV, 3 hot meals etc etc.

but No vote

Normally this sort of thing is reactionary trolling, but here it's very relevant. How can prison act as a deterrent when it takes away things people don't care about - the vote - and lets them keep all the things they do care about? It doesn't really make sense.

And a vote is arguably more valuable than any of those things anyway...

if you cannot abide by the rules your society lays down why should you have a say in the way its run

I personally would have chain gangs and a return to cold bleak victorian hellholes though..make it so crummy people would never want to go back no matter how crappy their life is.

I doubt it.
most of them would want drugs/fags than a vote every 5 years.

Fair simple way to sort this out to be honest. Give each prisoner a choice. Do you want to vote or have this mars bar. I honestly think 90% of them will take the mars bar.

They couldnt care less about voting.

I'm betting that most of them probably don't care, they can't even act like normal humans and this is why the majority of these people are in prison in the first place.

For those who haven't seen it here's John Hirst celebration video. He's the prisoner, serving life for murder, that went to Europoean Court of Human Rights
