GTX580 specs and benchmarks

I'm only guessing here but people's ill (ish) feelings towards the card is probably because of what the card turned out to be... fastest card though it may be but placing its performance in the context of how much power it consumes and how much heat it gives off is probably what 'disappoints' people.

If you were to adjust/weight the performance (in a very crude way) of the gtx480 with a similar performing ati card by power consumption and heat output then you can see that it could have been quite a 'desperate' attempt from NV to churn out a card to win the 'fastest gfx crown' despite operating power/heat issues. Can't blame them for going down this (only) route though :)

I'm definately not disputing the power/heat aspects of people's choices. Those are perfectly logical reasons for not getting the 480.

I can't recall the last Nvidia top end single GPU king that was under £400 at launch.

ati are guilty too... i got an x800xt platinum from OCuK @ ~£400 back in 2004 :(
given inflation and what not.... spending £400 on a single card now is nothing compaired to the old days

TBH I won't go back to AMD until they get a decent control panel similar to nVidia and sort out their power management issues in games, something nVidia had sorted with the release of fermi. It's not just the card I consider, it's the software and features as well.

Hmmm wasn't your opinion was somewhat different when you actually had an AMD card?

Thank you Scougar, i respect any and all opinions but i think people take it too seriously. Sure some of us prefer a certain brand etc etc etc but when was the last time anyone had a laugh in this neck of the woods?
I dare say people will be debateing the pro's and con's for aeons to come....oh wait i can feel the temperature rising allready....it's decidedly......toasty :D

Last Nvidia card I owned was the 8800GT and it rocked, since then I have owned 4870 and 5870 both of which rocked however I might be tempted to go back to green for a change.

Decided to sell the backplate with the card, from all accounts the 580 is going to be a cool customer.;)

Did you not appreciate them when you went from Nvidia to AMD?

No powerplay issues back then and the CP has improved greatly as well.

with all the talk of new cards (amd6970/nv580) lots of people are getting twitchy and want to get the latest fastest single GPU...
but for what??
none of the new cards are offering ground breaking technology, none are offering great breakthroughs in performance , so whats going on here??
tbh it seems to me this generation (6970/580) is BS
as title... wait for some reliable reviews to see just how far ahead these cards are, a mild increases in performance isnt worth selling your old card at a loss just to buy one of these at a premium. wait for 28nm
