GTX580 specs and benchmarks

drunkenmaster> Regardless of the failings of Nvidia and the foundry, the 480GTX was STILL the fastest single GPU card. It annoys me that people keep berating it and Nvidia for this. ATI have been guilty of releasing an underperforming high-leakage card series as well, no point getting on the high horse time after time. A lot of tech companies (and other markets) are unable to meet the design spec, but once again, despite all the issues, it STILL was the fastest single GPU.

I'm only guessing here but people's ill (ish) feelings towards the card is probably because of what the card turned out to be... fastest card though it may be but placing its performance in the context of how much power it consumes and how much heat it gives off is probably what 'disappoints' people.

If you were to adjust/weight the performance (in a very crude way) of the gtx480 with a similar performing ati card by power consumption and heat output then you can see that it could have been quite a 'desperate' attempt from NV to churn out a card to win the 'fastest gfx crown' despite operating power/heat issues. Can't blame them for going down this (only) route though :)

Same as 480 at launch, it will be £450-£500 if there is limited availability and 6970 isnt out.

My concern with the 580 is if most of the performance comes from increased stock clock frequency then it wont be worth an upgrade from 480. The extra shaders are only what +7%?

Would you pay £429 for a GTX580? Let us know if this is good value.

Why can't we have a roll eyes icon? When has top end video cards EVER been good value?? You can be expected to as much as half again for only a moderate improvement in performance.

Anyway at £429 that's about what I would expect the launch price to be, when the dust starts to gather the price will then start to tumble.

£429 sounds a conservative price to me, 480 was that at launch so why wouldnt 580?

Given 480 had significant competition and in theory the 580 will have less as the 6970 wont be out I think £429 is generous.

The 6970 will be out soon enough, only the 'must buy nvidia' fanatics will not wait for the 6970.

TBH I won't go back to AMD until they get a decent control panel similar to nVidia and sort out their power management issues in games, something nVidia had sorted with the release of fermi. It's not just the card I consider, it's the software and features as well.

Not even DM can deny the CCC interface is pretty dire compared to Nvidia's. Even the driver installation looks like it was designed for Windows 3.1 but despite the aesthetics it never gives me any trouble.

Needs to be at least £100 less or it will be Amd\Ati for me again. If this price is true and the 6970 is up to the mark I can see Amd killing Nvidia again like they did with the 4870 and 5870.:(
The 480gtx is currently around the £350 - £375 mark so i imagine the 580gtx will be more to start with. £399 - £449 is highly likely imo with the usual price gouging that happens with new cards / limited stocks.

500$ is the alleged USA RRP.
Add 17.5% vat they should be around £380.

Obviously were going to get immense price gauge on these puppies because of the limited supply. £350 I might be tempted. If it goes into £400++ I can pick up a much faster 5970 now...
