A nifty trick if you fancy an extended holiday at the end of April next year!!

Though i'd be interested to know how many days holiday people get with companies that don't include bank holidays in their contracted figures.
Currently 23 + 4 closure days(between xmas and new year) + bank holidays
will soon be 29 + 4 closure days + bank holidays

The joys of working in Education, we don't get as much as academics though

I'm surprised so many companies seem to be happy dishing out 36+ days of holiday per year when they are only obliged to do 28.

There's been talk of other companies allowing employee's to 'buy' extra holiday days. I'm not quite sure how this works though.

We get 28 pa. Accrued at 2.35 or something days per month worked. With 5 allowed to be carried over into the new year to be used by the end of March.
I'll probaly do this nearer the time. I've used all my holiday up booking time off for x-mas! I was suprised to find that BH's are paid leave, is this the norm? I've only ever really had part time work before this so if you weren't working you weren't paid. But if you did work it was usually for 1.5/2 x standard rate.

The main reason for companies forcing employees to take bank holidays would be if your place of work doesn't open on bank holidays (e.g. a bank).

If you work in retail, it's probably the opposite.

Nope. We get days in lieu, but it still sucks. It's all very well getting a random day off, but people don't go out to celebrate random days so it isn't the same.

I miss all the fun. :( Leaving in Feb though.

I usually try to work Christmas day. Flying to Thailand this time though!

Brilliant, will book this today. 2 days flexi and 2 days annual so 11 days off for 2 days leave :)

edit for leave - get 31 days plus upto 2 days flexi per month (build up time if you work over 7.24 a day) and all bank holidays.

You are not taking 11 days, you are taking 4.

If the company shuts, if they don't shut it's a days holiday you take anywhere. Any other outcome is fairly unlikely.

No matter how many days leave a company gives if they are open on a bank holiday they won't just give you those off as well - because there would be no staff.

Even if they do allow people off they would need to encourage people in (else there would be no staff) with things like double time and/or a day in lieu.

So whichever way you work it, you're probably going to end up with extra holiday days to use when you want if you are working on a bank holiday.

Leave is leave even if it's a bank holiday.

YESSSS just checked the calender and no one has booked this yet for themselves so im diving right in there :D

I've just noticed something that may give you all a nice long break at the end of April next year. Due to the vagaries of Easter being movable (I was raised a Catholic and I've still no idea how the guy managed to die any time between March and May ) the Easter weekend falls the weekend before the May bank holiday weekend.....

So, Easter weekend is Friday 22th April - Monday 25th April. May day bank holiday is Monday 2nd May. Therefore, book Tuesday 26th - Friday 29th off at the cost of 4 days leave and it's an 11 day break for the taking :p

Booked mine a few weeks ago :D

I tend to book bank holiday weeks as being on a 4 evening week mon to thu ,3days gives me 10 days ,so even with my 20 day allowance i can manage nearly 8 weeks at my caravan in Cornwall

LOL at the amount of HR depts who must be thinking "blimey, that's a bit in advance", right now!

Cool, I'll get 11.5 days off, as we get a privilege half day on Maundy Thursday too :)

30 days + 8 bank hols + 2.5 privilege days here :D (plus flexi leave too!)

Christmas work for us every year is ridiculously lucrative, and I'm talking £1500+ a day, Christmas eve, Christmas day and Boxing day. Am I working it? Like **** am I. 5 years of working every Christmas, I'm having this one off.

£1500 a day is good!
We are getting £750 a day for the 3 main days and £250 for any of the others that are deemed 'essential' (of which there are 3).

That's nice. They're being clever ******** at my company this Christmas. In order to qualify for the bonus, you HAVE to do one 'essential' day in order to qualify for one Christmas bonus, 2 days for 2 bonus shifts, 3 for 3. So I cannot just turn up 24,25,26 December, take 5 grand and run. I need to do 27,28,29 as well to get the bonuses, otherwise it's just £380 flat rate per day, regardless of what day you worked. Going by the Christmas roster I checked this week, they're going to be short-staffed. Oh well. Was good while it lasted.
