Why such slow Raid 0 with my 2x Samung 320gb F4's...

I have tried raid 0 before with seagate and also got slow results

The PC i am testing raid on is

Q6600
Abit AB9 using the onboard raid
Raid 0 4k stripe

And i can only get 164mb read and 156mb write. Only a few mb above a single drive

Is it down to a poor onboard raid? I also have a cheap pci raid card, maybe try this?

The AB9 has to controllers, the Intel ICH8R and the JMicron® JMB363, upon which controller do you have your RAID0 setup on, if Intel what drivers are you using?

Which OS are you on?

What made you choose 4KB stripe size?

XP Pro

Raid is on the JMB363 . Don't think the other ports accept raid...Only on the pro version i believe?
Just tried out 4kb, now done 128kb and speeds still the same

This is why your read/write speeds are low...the jmicron controller is terrible!

I linked to the Pro in my last link (which your's isn't), as you state the AB9 doesn't support RAID on the Intel cont, as it uses the ICH8 cont...

I would just revert to using your 320GB F4's as single HDDs and forget about RAID until you get a new mobo etc., another point is that there is not any real performance gain in using RAID over single HDD, unless you are regularly working with large (video) files (copying/moving) and/or often unzipping large compressed archives...

Cheers, i was hoping to use the raid for big files
I also tried a cheap Silicon Image PCI-E X1 raid card that i got from ebay years ago and got 140mb read and 170mb write. So again lesson learned don't buy cheap rubbish...

I have two of my F1's on a cheapo raid 1 pci-e 1x card, and get only just above single drive read, but raid speed for writes. I only originally got it due to needing the extra sata ports so im not bothered much as its nice for it to be seen as one big drive. My onboard raid 5 works nicely though (nvidia controller)
