Essential info for courier drivers

I hate delivering high value items (mobiles/ps3 etc) as not allowed to leave with neighbours or post offices. Tried one guy 7 times over 2 weeks worse thing was 4 times was within the time frame he asked for FFS

Could not have put it much better myself. When I did my last driver day out we had a similar one. Drive up to property. Park outside in big orange van. Walk to door. Ring bell. Wait 20 seconds. Knock. Wait another 30 seconds. Walk back to van. Get "Sorry we missed you card". Walk back to house. Knock again. Write out card. Post through letterbox. Door opens!

"Trying to run off were you?"

WHAT? We've been loitering in your front garden for the best part of 3 minutes and only now you decide to actually take notice?

In my experience, the vast majority of people who say "Oh the driver never knocked/never attempted" are either liars or deaf.
I regularly get stories like "I watched your driver from my window walk up to my front door, stand there for a minute, and then walk off and drive away in his van"

Great. So why on earth did you not just go and open the sodding door!? Seriously, people are mental.

I do agree that most people are a bit crap when it comes to being in/hearing the door. IN general I stick up for delivery guys as around my area they are generally very good. We had a RM guy for years who was fantastic, his replacement is good but not as friendly, we've had plenty of other companies who were all great.

But the other day I was waiting in for a delivery from DHL, keep in mind, I got a pizza, a tesco's food order, 2 deliveries for someone a couple doors down throughout the day, heard the door every time with no problem. DHL guy, nothing, I checked the tracking at about 5pm, delivery listed as something along the lines of, delivered, left in safe place as authorised.

Ran downstairs, just left it on my front door step, for all the world too see, had been there for 2 hours. Likewise most people won't allow their drivers to leave things unsigned for, nor was it in a safe place, nor have I ever filled in those "extra instruction" boxes asking them to leave it in a safe place.

The problem with stuff being held at depot for customers is it takes up space, it is an insurance liability, it stands a chance of being damaged and so on.
Lots of people would leave stuff at depots for weeks if they thought they could get away with it. And they're the same people who freak when they find out it's been returned to sender because nobody bothered to come and get it.

Or lost if its my depot

I'm occasionally one of those people who orders next day delivery despite knowing that I won't be in to collect it, if I'm lucky then the driver will be able to leave it with one of my neighbours who frequently is in but more usually it's because I want to be sure that it has actually arrived at the depot before the weekend since that's the only time I can normally collect parcels. If there was an option on delivery forms where I could specify just to have it sent to the depot and I'd pick it up from there then I might consider that but I've never seen it - perhaps with some reduction in the price given that I'm taking on part of the pickup and delivery schedule.

+1, being at uni quite often 9-7 means that I'm pretty much always going to the depot to pick it up, I order next day to be sure that it's arrived, and then phone the depot to say I'll be round in the evening to collect it that very same day. I usually actually have a very good experience with couriers, sometimes you get the odd ****er driver who claims he left a card but didnt, but it's not representative of the company and thankfully very rare.

Maybe a previous resident did and they just assumed you're sharing or whatever?

I have a house with a number, conveniently it's right next door the the next (odd) number and so on, I find it helps people find my house.

I have a wireless door bell, I put the buzzer near the room I am in, I test the door bell works.

I don't put big headphones and blast my ears with loud music / cod4 when I'm expecting a delivery.

I don't have problems with drivers not turning up, I must just be lucky.

Me too Telescopi, if I know something's being delivered I will deliberately sit downstairs all day and watch TV and not play on my PC with headphones etc.

And yeah I've never had problems with the drivers either.

Our delivery men are not that bad to be honest. Always get the same one and the RM one is normally quite cheerful when someone opens the door (and surprised even).

Some will leave the parcel behind our recycling boxes or go sometimes go round the back and put it by our backdoor. Although one muppet thought that placing the parcel at our front door, then leaning our mat up against it was a good idea for "hiding it".

Never had an issue with my Couriers, RM are extremely helpful as I know the guy :) And when expecting a delivery from UPS I just listen for the Buzzer, agree with the above poster about the dodgy shorts they wear though lol ...

I have a dog, if you knock the door he barks and will try and kill you through the front door so I never miss a delivery.

I found that it depends on where you are to an extent. I don't think I ever got carded when I lived in a student house in Plymouth. At home however there have been multiple "missed" deliveries...

Bearing in mind the missed deliveries usually aren't carded (and there's a reason for that I'll mention in a minute) and the first thing I know about a missed delivery is when checking on their website that night... Now I live in a 100 year old straight residential street, with a normally numbered house, odds one side, evens the other, you know the type (not one of those modern housing estates where you can get lost trying to get from no. 1 to no.2 etc)...

Now maybe I miss them ringing the bell? Well I doubt it as I can see the path and door from my front room, where I was invariably sat (so I could see the door incase the bell didn't work) when they apparently tried to deliver (remember no card). Maybe I was blind? Well the dog would normally let me know there was someone at the door...

So yeah, some delivery drivers are fine (and I've had a few that have gone out of their way to get a parcel to me), some are also lazy ****s! :p
