What config. will beat my 5970 + 5870 (tri-fire)

wouldnt you be better of just dropping the 5870 and using just the 5970 as tri-crossfire is crap?

Actually tri is probably the sweet spot when it comes to multiple card performance. Quadfire doesn't scale as well as tri from what ive read.

Too open a question really - At what res, AA quality etc ? Does it really matter for a single screen @ 1080p say?

If your cards are 1GB per GPU and you use 3x1080p monitors then the 6990 is a candidate with scaling like the 6000 series .... as would be 580 GTX SLI maybe

I was wondering the same and have since sold the 5870 as I found that Eyefinity on 3 x 1080p with tri-fire was marginally better than 2xGPUs .. single screen it rocks though :D

I now realise how capable the 5970 on its own is and look forward to a single GPU beating it on average in real games, and when it does I'll be after 2 of em!

480 sli will.

If you have 1gb card(s) then even more so at resolutions above 1080. At eyefinity resolutions, the 480's will have a more comfortable lead with min. fps due to the extra 0.5gb they pack.

Even at 1080p, it's not too hard to hit the memory limit of a set of 5870's. The 2gb models obviously don't suffer this problem and allow you to apply the higher aa/res settings and draw out the power of cfx.

That said though, 3 gpu's would be wasted at anything smaller than a 30" or an eyefinity setup but then your vram needs to be up to the job at those resolutions.

Sorry to dig this thread up again but i'm in a bit of a dilemma.

I have had a very good offer for my cards from a friend.

What would you chaps do?

I quite fancy SLI 580's.

From reading up on benchmarks they are roughly on par but the 580's have much better minimum framerates.?

Please help an old boy out.

what you gotta ask yourself chief, is £750+ on 2 cards worth it ?
been thinking of sli myself, but the cons far out way the pro's
