Not being funny, but by your comments the AE86 is crap at everything because at the end of the day, a 130BHP odd hatchback rocking an open diff is hardly going to make you a drift king.

(From what I've heard) it's one of those special, special cars that is more than the sum of it's parts. It brings the absolute best out in its drivers and that to me makes it an utterly epic machine. I wouldn't spend £5k on one because I'm genetically an absolute tight wad, but I have amassed a fair bit of respect for them over the years :).

The majority of people will see it as an old, **** Toyota, but as someone who drives such a thing day in, day out, that's a part of the magic :).

Oh, and doesn't it have a live rear axle?
 
So an EK9 is 5 grand in the UK, are they a limited run at all or not?

I only ask ask 306 Rallye prices have stuck to around the £2000 mark for good ones for the past couple of years, but these are a limited set of cars, only 500 when new and only in the UK.

What stops someone from just importing more EK9s and flooding the market?

The thing about the AE86 is, outside of drifting interests it really isn't that great, especially not standard.

seems to be the words of someone who has first hand experience of these cars.

or you could have said "I hear/read/been told from owners and enthusiasts that these cars aren't very good in standard form"

But you seem to have first hand knowledge of many cars on the planet earth from reading some of your posts.
 
They are not £5k just because of a lack of supply. There are plenty for sale.

But here is where they begin to fall down in my eyes. Are they £3k better than a 306 Rallye. REALLY? Past all the fan boy scene rubbish. Is a EK9 £3,000 pounds better than a hot hatch that was praised for being absolutely bleeding fantastic back in it's day (and even appears in "Best Hot Hatch ever" lists today)?

And if the answer to the above question is some how "Yes", is it any better than a supercharged Rallye/306 GTI6 that would probably proceed to wipe a EK9 across the floor head to head in the "B Road" challenge?

I don't hold out any "hate" for the Civic. If Honda fanboys want to drop a considerable amount of money on them then that is cool, but you don't really seem like the type of person who is Vtec > Everything. I mean, the sheer fact that you didn't even include it in your shortlist absoultely SCREAMS this even though you don't want to admit it. For a person who I figured to be all about the bangs for the bucks, a EK9 Type R seems like a stupid choice.

I went out in Tims at one of the Manchester Meets, while the exhaust and engine was comedy gold, with the rev counter going right up to 10k.

It didn't feel that quick, and handled quite tidy, I wouldn't pay the £3800 ontop of what my 306 Rallye cost to buy one since there was no real world difference in it, just how big your balls are and how thick your skull is.
 
Joshy, when you are purchasing a car like this, it doesn't matter so much whether it is £3k better than a 306 if the 306 just doesn't appeal to the prospective owner.

Much in the same way as you wouldn't dream of buying an EK9 if you liked the 306, but Hondas weren't really your thing.

This point is only reinforced when you're talking about a car that barely depreciates - if it does at all.

But as Johnny mentioned earlier, when you have two cars (DC2 and EK9) that have "proper" suspension, rather unique engines, and that aspect of rawness and focus that brings the smiles, it becomes worth it IMO. Some people aren't in to FWD cars, or crisp handling. Some people prefer waftyness, or a bit of sideways action, each to their own but the crisp handling suits my preferences more than anything else.

It seems like the Honda scene has a reputation for offering immense "Bang for buck" pretty much all over the World, to me that is why they are so popular, not because they are particularly awesome cars, but Over here it doesn't really seem to be the case. Parts and cars aren't that much cheaper than "proper" Jap cars like the Supras, Evos and Imprezas of the world. Insurance is particularly expensive for what are 1.6/1.8 hatchbacks, so you've really you've got to take a step back and think "What's the point"?

You can own something that'll bend it over and do unspeakable things to it in a straight line and not be a million miles off on a B Road, so why settle for a 12 year old Honda Civic (unless you have Honda in the blood, in which case fair play)? :confused:.

I suspect people will be along soon to say that I "Don't get it" :D.

But for someone who isn't really interested in straight line performance, what is the point?

I'd much rather have the b-road smiles :)
 
If B roads are the Be all and end all, what's wrong with something that has been extensively track/fast road preped?

We both know that the Civic was built with SOME compromises in mind, seam welded chassis and "impressive" engine aside.

£2k nearly bought me a fully preped E30 325i hillclimb car. £5k would have bought you something utterly bonkers. Stuff in rear bench seat and belts for when the little one has to ride along and you're good to go.
 
It is something that has plagued my mind, but I want something that is half civil, please remember that this car will be my run around as well.

If it wasn't, I'd just MOT, tax and insure the Strada.
 
The one thing I will say for Honda cars that wear red badges, whenever I watch a Best Motoring video where they take a selection of stock cars for a 5 lap battle around a circuit, the type-r's always put in consistent laps, sure the faster stuff shoots of into the distance for a lap or two, but they are soon caught up and overtaken by the hondas.

Best Motoring makes Top Gear seem scientific.
