Well, that was quick!, had the mondeo for 3 months, now finally found another well paying job which warrants a new purchase :D

I can spend a max of about 12k, but would rather spend 10k, only downside is it needs to be a deseasel :(. However, my trip to work is 30 miles each way and it involves some nice roads :D, so i'd like something that handles well ;).

So to sum up....

Essentials...

up to 12k
Saloon
Quite quick (0-60 in less than 8 secs)
2005 or newer

Ideally...

Leather
Nav (i drive or MMI style)
Bluetooth
Dual zone climate
Premium sound system (Bose / Harmonn Kardon)

That's it really, obvious choices are BMW 3/5 series or Audi A3 - A8? Anything else?

Thanks

Fun diesels really limits you to ze Germans as most other companies just make lower powered 4 pots. A jag of some sort might do the job though, with that 2.7?

30 miles each way isn't that much - have you actually done the sums to see what the costs are? If this is an immediate purchase because of a new job, I'm guessing it's at least partly financed so you could offset extra fuel costs against a lower monthly repayment

Didnt you used to have an A3?

Yes, i loved it and i still wish i had it :(

Over a week, i reckon i'll be pushing 400 miles, i'm driving a 2.0 mondeo petrol atm, i'm getting about 28mpg, i reckon with a 330D / 530D(my first choice really as i'd like a V6 this time), i'd get 40mpg(ish) (book figure - don't know how accurate that is). the 30mile drive is 24miles A19 then the rest is twisty B roads).

The car is going to be part financed yes, probably have about 4k deposit (cash and trade in). I can comfortably afford the repayments on the finance over a couple of years so i don't mind.

Crap budget, so buy another A3.

Only buys crappy older E60's, high mileage prefacelift E90's etc but is way way too much for an E46 or similar.

So he buys a 330i and pockets the change for petrol.

To be honest spending £8k and.. yea doing that makes a lot more sense.

There are quite a few no-mans-land budgets around where it doesnt quite buy the really nice stuff but is too much for the previous gen stuff.

Although really if you've just got a new job its probably a good idea to wait before taking out big financial commitments. If you end up getting fired or you cant hack it, or you dont like it or something you are screwed if you are back on the dole with a car loan.

You'd need to be bonkers to spend 5 figures on an S-Type. Too much cash to spend on a car which can also be found in the £2k market!

So that's a "no" to the question about the sums - the fuel difference is aout £20-£25 per month. Your loan payments are going to be between £190 and £250 per month. So you're looking at £250+£50 in fuel at 40mpg if you spend the whole 12k.

Spend 11,300 instead, that lowers your loan to 230 per month, spend it on a petrol at 30mpg for a £70 fuel spend - same total spend.

That car there bears no resemblance to a 2k S type.

You might as well compare an e46 to an e90.
