New jobSpec me a car - 12k max budget

400 work miles a week though can easily turn in to 600-800 a week with personal mileage. That starts to cross the line between petrol and diesel.

Aye but circumstances change and you don't always end up in the same job or doing the same mileage over the time it would take to recoup the mpg + running costs for D vs P. You could have had the petrol version given your mileage even though you were expecting to do more.

I dont see any issue with the diesel requirement here.

I do think though that a 5+ year old car you'll take towards 100k reasonably quickly is a bad thing to buy on finance. It's going to break, you wont have a warranty and its going to cost big money to keep repairing.

The complexity of these cars keeps increasing but the reliability doesnt seem able to keep up.

I wouldnt want a diesel BMW with iDrive and an autobox without knowing it'll be under warranty for my entire ownership period.

Sadly that means buying one newer than 5 years old and with less than 77k miles on it.

This, I just couldn't be bothered to type it out.

If you know you will be in the same job doing 20-30k + per year then over 3-5 years the D may offer a saving assuming a relatively even purchase and running cost compared to the petrol so you can actually benfit from the fuel saving.

In reality you may find a 2-3 year old petrol car with under 30k miles for the same price as the 5 year old D with 80k+ miles. Add 60-80k miles on to that and you have to hope the D doesn't throw up many of the running costs modern ones can especially as it will be outside any useful warranty.

Another kid?! Isnt it only a few months since you got rid of the last woman? :p

Slow things down man, that includes buying expensive cars 35 seconds after getting a new job :p

lol, it's about a year now.

I'm in a position now where i can walk into pretty much any job of my profession at the same rate of pay - if not more, so worrying about redundancy isn't a problem, the reason i chose the trade i'm in ;). Infact, i'm being head hunted by another company already lol.

What do you do?

to get a good spec car with lots of options like leather / hfi / nav / bluetooth etc.. you usually have to wait. But one will come up eventually :)

Broaden your search to round the leeds / wakefield area if you want. I wont mind taking a look at one to confirm if its worth a proper look or not.

I ave included Leeds, it's under 60 miles away lol. I would travel for the right car, i'm not going to buy the first one i look at anyway :)

Wakefield is 80 miles from redcar, and obviously i can cover area 10/20 miles south of that too extending the range to more like 100 miles from redcar as opposed to 60. Anyway the offers there if you want it :)

I'd second that.

Only reason i get away with a saloon now is because my 7 year old doesnt have all that stuff anymore. Just a booster seat.

Having a hatchback when you've got baby crap to cart around makes life easier.

Urgh Nasty Zetec though. IF he's dreaming of A3s with Nav, Bose Hifi and bluetooth a Mondeo Zetec wont cut it :p

Buy my leon Wez! :D It's used to doing the A19 and B roads of the area - it's meant to be :p

Where's the new job at anyway? North or South?

I've never driven one, so I can't vouch for how good they are, but a 300C CRD would be within budget and would appear to tick the boxes.

Why?, I'm hardly going to want a coupe, nor do i feel the need for a people carrier!

Go try getting buggy / travel system into a saloon boot and a weeks shopping and anything else.
Boot space is generall ok in saloons, the problem is the accessible entry to the boot.

When i said a saloon, i meant the size,a hatch would actually be my preference.

Ummm, thanks but i think i'll pass lol. It's just near Northallerton, Solberge Hall
