under age gamers

Meh, the games I played as a kid pales in significance to ammount of stuff I saw on the internet.

I've seen some things, man... I've seen some things.

Yes, it does matter. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

Does playing an adult-rated videogame turn a child into a sex-fiend/killer? Unlikely.
Does playing an adult-rated videogame have an impact on a child's development and perception of the world? Definitely.

Things are rated a certain way for a reason. We have restrictions to protect children from things that they shouldn't be seeing until they reach an age at which they can fully comprehend and understand what they are seeing/engaging in.

No, a 17/364 year old isn't suddenly going to turn mature and ready in one day. But that argument is utterly flawed. What about a 9 year old playing games about running over prostitutes? Or stabbing people with knives?

Unfortunately it isn't feasible to assign an age rating to each person, so what happens is a universal age rating by which to protect the majority of people.

Surely anyone with more than two braincells to rub together can see that music, television, movies and videogames have a massive impact on a person, just as real-world experience does. To deny it, is to deny that which is right in front of you.

someone needs a chill pill ;)

Seeing superman didn't make me want to jump off a roof and fly away

did you have sex before 18? did you ever play cops and robbers with toy guns when you were young? ever watch a movie that was rated above your age as a child? did you believe in Santa until 18?

ofc your environment affects how you perceive things and grow, but doesn't make it a fact that entertainment is necessarily detrimental. I think that school, friends and parents had a much bigger impact on my personality/behaviour

Firstly, don't call me a fool.

I was killing "native americans" and baddies 50 years ago.

I started [according to the Sun] demon worship at age 16, when I started playing a new game called "Dungeons and Dragons".

I have watched filmed "adult" pornography, on and off, for 30 odd years [and mags even longer].

None of these has mede me a killer/sexual predator [dunno about deviant... :>} ]/Satanist.

Yes it will affect some people, which is why there is the "don't try this at home" mantra.
The VAST majority does NOT get affected.

The only game I have banned my son [now 13] from is Vice City and the like - as I feel it demeans people in a too lifelike way. The other shooty things are obviously just avatars.

For the record I don't agree with parents buying kids underage games etc. Having said that, an internet forum where most people have played games underage will always lead to "I played games underage and it never did me any harm" etc comments, some posters in the thread are probably under 18 themselves :)

going to have to learn some day. not really a big deal tbh.

my gripe with some of the younger kids is that some can be very annoying in online games. some of the zit popping yanks are incredibly rude. it's probably keyboard warrior syndrome rather than the adult games/movies, although I am sure they aren't like that in actual life.

They don't have a age rating in America that's why you get so many underage players. They have an "advised" age for the game. But nothing to stop them playing.

Another friend, you're spot on.

If it keeps them home rather than beating up some unsuspecting dad on his way home from the shops then it's fine by me.

I would have been about 13 when GTA first launched in the UK. Obviously younger with games like Doom, Quake and the original Mortal Kombat.

I played all of these games before I was legally old enough to do so. However, it was with trust from my parents that I would be sensible regarding the content of it. They trusted me to listen to the Fugees, or watch Bottom. The moment I stepped out of line (swearing, overly angry etc), I lost the console, telly or whatever.

My parents paid heed to the content warnings and dad would often check the game out with me. They never let me watch films like Se7en however, and seeing it recently I can completely understand why.

I think the difference is that as games have become more detailed, they've become more immersive and involving. I think it's now more important to have tighter reigns over what your children play.

I don't play certain games in front my daughter (who is 5) and I hope that I will be able to trust, when she's older, that she can listen to some music and watch films with more adult themes without it impacting her like my parents trusted me. I will certainly keep closer eye on games and particularly the internet; she already uses YouTube and has managed to watch a few clips of Family Guy which she probably shouldn't have seen!

At the age of 17 364 days old, what difference does 1 day make? None! So what about one day on that? And then another day on that, and on and on.
Brilliant logic. Just flawless.

You are clearly a model citizen and games have in no way warped your world view of simple things like, say, the ageing process.

I was 16 when my mum bought me the first GTA game.

I was 11 when I first played Mortal Kombat, and I was 12 when I first played MKII in the arcade at Quazer.

From memory back then games didn't have age ratings as such they had ESRB ratings and where not enforced.

My mum didn't really know much about the games to be honest but she knew her son and trusted that I understood it was a videogame.

I guess I was lucky growing up with games when age ratings where not an issue. I couldn't really say if my mum would buy me MW2/Saw etc today if I was 12/13/14/15, who knows.

I was 5 when I first played MK2... Knew how to do fatality and everything; was pretty sweet and I turned out ok. It's the real world that you've got to be weary of, not fantasy.
