Yo all

Currently have an 8800 and black ops is basically unplayable even on low (although at 1080) so looking to buy a new rig

Not sure what to go for, be it AMD or Nvidia, have always been a big fan of nvidia, their larger price tags dont bother me

What should I go for? Or is it worth waiting for something out soonish?

Ta in advance

Have you checked framerate? a lot of people are finding the game feels like <30fps much of the time even when kicking out good framerates.

Depends on what you plan to spend, if your looking at £200+ cards then I would wait for the new ATI cards.

I'd figured around £400? Wanted the new rig to be good for when BF3 comes out so I want to get as good as poss

framerate is pretty spikey, however a mate of mine on virtually the same spec at least finds the game playable. think the game needs a good old patch and it will be playable on low settings

Defiantly wait then. £400~ will probably be enough get you the top end HD6990.

Defiantly or definitely?

I can't see the 6990's being less than £400, the 6970's maybe.

However as the op obviously has a liking for Nvidia cards then the GTX 580 would seem to fit the bill perfectly, and these can be had for around 400 quid right now :)

I would not spend money upgrading just for Black Ops atm... I'm on a fairly decent spec and getting 100+fps in the game and it still only just about feels playable - if I didn't have the framerate counter up I'd swear I was sub 30fps quite a lot of the time.

I will go with the 6990 if its going to be better than the 580, just have been out of the game for a while so dont know whats best anymore. Clock speeds on the AMD seem higher but then some people still think the Nvidia are the better cards

definitely dont mind spending a bit more for quality / less chance of it bricking in 2 years / lower temps etc

not JUST for black ops. as above I want this PC to own for battlefield 3 as well, plus the mrs needs an upgrade so she will get my current rig, and been wanting a new machine for a while now :P

I'll be suprised if the 6970 is under £400 - unless it can't match the GTX580 - based on rumoured specs it should comfortably match it atleast.

It looks like ATI have gone with small core ( least expensive small core option ) 2000~ sp core for the 6970 and the 1600~ for the 6850. That would make them about 1.5 - 1.6x ~ faster than the year old cards they are replacing and more than likely cheaper to build. As long as TSMC have hit the ATI the production targets ( looking at the £399 RRP GTX580 TSMC have improved a lot) they should be very reasonably priced.

£400 and £500+ with 7000 cards due shortly they would have to offer a 3DFX type performance jump on this and the next round GPU's, and I can't see that happening with ATI's efficiency first, bang for buck strategy. I kind of hope ATI have gone with the massive super fast expensive core, as I can see a gap for something that really offers uber high end performance, but I think its unlikely that ATI will have moved form the small core plan, especially with the electronics industry in its current state.

I know that the CoD Engine hasn't changed that much from MW to WaW to MW2. I do know that CoD4 and MW2 ran great on my old 8800GT and I had no problems at all at 1680x1050 with all the in game optiosn on with both games. not sure why you'd have problems even though you are running 1080. I can't imagine it would be that different.

want a whole new rig, just the gfx card is the only bit i am unsure of really

and yeah mw2 runs absolutely fine for me mid details @ 1080, but i swear black ops is literally unplayable. i see someone, goto shoot, freeze up, then i'm dead :(

I definitely think its issues with the game rather than my spec, but until they bring out a patch that may or may not solve my problems I am looking into this avenue of resolution :P
