A bloke I work with had one of these. He insisted it 'went like stink', I suspect he was delusional. It was a lovely looking car though, and well equipped and comfortable :)

Thats not what I said.

I said it never got the new 'bus style' (ie the stock) steering wheel that the E39 got for MY2002, which is why it still has the older style one on a Y plate.

The Sport wheel was an option on the E38 - but misses out some of the multifunction buttons.
Which one are you calling the 'bus style'? The one you have now?

The old M-Sport missed out on recirc and heated steering wheel (when specified).

I'd roll with the old 4 spoke. It looks a bit gash, but is a lot more comfy to drive with. 3 spoke wheels mean you cant hold them with one hand flat at the bottom of the wheel - that makes me cry :(

That would mean driving with your hand slightly to the right in the lower right segment of the wheel.

Did you not think of that 3 spoke wheel designers! The horror

Or you could just hold the wheel in the correct position ;)

Although I'm most comfortable resting it on the centre part.

I drive with my knee so either looks fine to me.

Wish i could do this. Must be the way i set but my knees never seem high enough to control the wheel with :(

I'd say it was height, but my dad's no taller and he drives with his knees quite happily.

I could drive with my knees with no trouble at all in the Leon. Very useful if you had to drink from and open a bottle of water..

Very hard in the Lolvo, probably due to the skinny and very shiny wheel, along with silly amounts of turn from lock to lock giving rather bus-like steering.
I've not tried in the Z3 as the seating position is totally different, and you can't adjust the wheel at all.

Knee driving is very handy when eating a big mac for example, it allows you to hold the box with one hand and the burger with the other, thus stopping bits from falling on the carpet.

I'd just get the GF to hold it but thats a different topic of conversation all together...

More on topic, is it just me or has the E38 dated quickly all of a sudden?

I think the E38 has looked dated for ages, not really surprising considering it was launched in 1994.
Wouldn't stop me getting one though, although I wouldn't want a pre-facelift. Those look proper old :o
