Rioting in London?

So why go to uni if you're just going to get a crap job?

Whilst my views on these protests are well known, there are many reasons to go to uni, not just so you can get a well paid job. Also low paid jobs do not mean that they are crap. I used going to university for a total different reason and my job prospects were the last thing that I was considering when I went.

In central London, more than 50,000 lazy, pretentious, self-absorbed protesters said it was vital for Britain's future that the cost of their education should not be allowed to eat into their handsome, white collar salaries and their capacity to pay for ****ty, new world music and holidays in the less touristy parts of Italy.

Why go then if you're no better off?

To pursue your interest in knowledge, to move to a new area, to reconcile with family, to party for 4 years, because some see that it's the done thing. There are many many reasons why someone would choose to go to university.

I did say to pursue knowledge... Also, my list was far from exhaustive. I've no idea what you're problem is.

If you want to pursue knowledge, go to a library.

My 'problem' is the ones complaining are probably the ones not taking university seriously, which seems like 90% of them.

So the fees increase isn't a bad thing in my opinion.

Many libraries won't have the specialised books that a university library will have. Also, you won't be able to access many databases without a university subscription. Finally, universities provide for discussions with experts which would be harder to get without a university place. I would not had been able to learn what I did in my field by using public libraries.

Though, I agree with the fees increase and have no problem with it being higher.

My argument with you is that university isn't solely for ensuring you get a higher paid job. You'd struggle to get an academic job without first going to university and most academics are not paid a lot.

So anything but to learn and gain a degree, great.

I went to university to study biology - I was interested in it and contemplating a related career. There isn't much money in science and that wasn't the reason why I chose it.

You can't possibly be suggesting that there were other means of investigating that career path?

And while they are not earning over 21,000 their loan is still incurring interest. Which means the longer you dont pay it off, the bigger the sum gets, and yes, its way above inflation now.

My generation was sold this as a 'zero interest loan' and 'the best loan you will ever have!'

Total con. Lies lies lies.

The loan does not incur interest until you start earning over 21k actually. Get your facts right.

Then pay for it yourself, no one will take issue with that, just so long as they don't foot the bill to something they never had.

If they don't have to pay up front, how will it ease the problem? You seem to be denying my argument and then using it yourself.

I also completely reject that this is a necessary measure to reduce the deficit in the short term. It'll have zero effect until the firsts students for it to affect actually start repaying their loans, probably in about 4 or 5 years.

And if reducing the deficit is so important, why are we giving £5 billion tax breaks to large companies for no good reason?

You either cut taxes and attract business and leave them high and lose business, along with all the jobs they produce.

That's why 100s of companies like Adobe are leaving California and taking the jobs to Utah.
