Are the gear boxes in this the same as the latest Z4 3.0 turbo? Wasn't impressed with the drivability on the Z4 in real world use.

That was shocking wasn't it? All the right power in all the wrong places. 3er will be a different application so may be better

Not quite sure quite why you're being silly, but pre-facelift W211s had loads of issues, so those should be avoided anyway.

Problematic or not they do look the same as that 20k one though dont they.

Appearing at a McDonalds near you soon :)

Would that stop you from buying one? Or 5. :p

Wouldnt want to sink £20k into one.

Because in 5 years time it's... just like that other one.

Whats the difference now between a 2000 E38 and a 1995? Not much. Grand? Two grand?

Ditto a 2002 and a 2007 E Class. Buying a car for large amounts of money after its production life has ended is a receipe for savage depreciation.

When would you buy one then? During the first few years you'll be bummed by the whore that is depreciation. When it's old it'll probably be falling to pieces and each piece will cost a gazillion dollars.

I dont give a monkeys if there is a cheap version of what i drive about, but i know plenty of people it does bother.

I'd have that 20k Merc over a 335 every day of the week :)

A few years into its model lifecycle.

In 2005, that 2002 E320 would have been £20k just like this 2007 one is now.

It's difficult though, as the facelift versions released in the later half of a cars life are arguably the best ones. There probably isnt a right time to buy :p

I think there is a big perception difference as well with different cars, its not cool to have a 2 generation old Business express ie E class or 5 series if you are image concious.

However i think its perfectly ok to have a nice clean 15 year old SL for example, some care are timeless some need to be kept new ish.

What's the newer equivalent to that E500? Or is a new model due soon?

Also, why is it called an E500 not an E550? Does the number not indicate engine size?

/Merc noob

Unless I'm missing a trick or not understanding, what makes the 3 series immune from this?

Nothing? Just the fact its in a different place in its model lifecyle - E92 was released in late 2006 and is due for replacement not until 2013.

It just stays fresher that little bit longer by virtue of the fact it came out 4 years after the E thats all :) The values will fall quicker towards the end of the cars life. I bet you lost more on a 2006 E46 330Ci over 3 years than you did on a 2001 330Ci over the same period had you bought them both say 6 months old..

Cars like the SL and other luxury class stuff are not bought in the same way, they never go through the company car/try-hard business park bandwagon. They dont tend to be owned by the same idiots who worry about having the latest plate. You know the types, seen walking around your nearest highstreet on their bluetooth headsets shouting business buzzwords :)

So are you not intending on keeping the next car for a while then? You seem to be overly concerned about resale value?

I'm not overly concerned but it is an important factor at this end of the market. The cost of a car like this is not the sticker price but the sticker price minus the resale value. It's not like cheaper stuff like my E39 was that you depreciate away to zero and forget about it.

You cant really ignore it.

Why would you not be concerned with resale value?

Because I'm of the school of thought that as long as it is a nice car, you are happy with it and intend on keeping it for a fair bit why let it effect your decision to the point where you actively avoid certain cars for no reason other than the fact that it's going to lose a few more quid over the coming years.

Fair enough if you only intend on buying one to knock about in until F10 prices get more reasonable (2-3 Years?), but if you're going to keep it for the level of time you have had your E39 for or even longer I don't see the point of being so concerned. I can't see a 5/6/7/8 year old 330i/335i being worth anything like the £20k you have to part with right now.

But he's stepped up a league in terms of purchase price hes gone from the 5-10k bracket which in 5 years results in not a lot of value to the 15-20k bracket which in 5 years still will have some value, so i suppose it is sensible to think about it.
