Perhaps, although I can definitely see why people would say all of those are overrated too.
The way I look at it is that if a band/artist has a huge fan base then how can they possibly be overrated? How can all of the fans be wrong and you be right?
The thread is pointless, not only because of the people who obviously posted for effect, but also because the definition of 'overrated' is not clearly defined.
What exactly does it mean anyway?
We've had lots of bands/artists mentioned but a lot of them have absolutely loads of fans, and have done for maybe 40+ years, how on earth can that band be classed as overrated?
As an example, I don't like The Beatles, have never done, but to say that they are overrated is a complete joke, just ask any of their millions of fans that they have had since they first started.
Because it's your personal opinion? There's no rules that determine whether a band is underrated, rated or overrated so this thread is entirely peoples opinions on bands they think are overrated for whatever reason.
As I said, I cannot comprehend why anyone would like Muse as I think their music is awful. That to me says they are overrated in my opinion because I don't understand why someone would like them.
No, to me that just says you don't like them. To then say that you think they are overrated just because you don't like them when millions of people do like them is a bit...I'm not sure what the word I'm looking for is tbh, is it pretentious?

As the OP I have to admit that the thread could have been titled better. But, on the other hand, music appreciation is a purely subjective thing, so whatever the thread title it's only ever going to elicit peoples' opinion anyway, their is no cold hard fact about best band, worst band etc.Doesn't mean it isn't worth a discussion though, after all their does seem to be a bit of a consensus on certain bands.

See I believe that there is a fundamental flaw in the idea of an overrated band. It's all subjective. I couldn't give a hoot about Britpop, find it to be a copycat, average and banal sub genre full of one hit wonders. Nor do I personally find any merit in the emo crap that seems to be floating around these days. But some people love it and live by it.
But I also don't personally rate many of the Classical greats, no do I have much more than a passing respect for Led Zeppelin or Deep Purpil however I entirely acknowledge their contribution to music as a whole. My personal opinion stated in such a sweeping manner as 'overrated' or 'underrated' has little or no relevance. Whether I like them or not is more relevant but then it does raise the question WHO CARES!!!

Hmm, lets think of a band/artist I have never actually heard a single song by but mentioning them will surely raise a few eyebrows and make people think I'm a seriously baaaad mother ******!
