Picked this up on the way home on Wednesday, used some club card vouchers to get 18 quid off the price, so not too bad.
Finally played it last night and what can I say.... how in the name of hell did this get 10/10 ratings? I’ve only seen the scores and not read the reviews, but unless the reviews were only focused on MP, and that is totally brilliant (I’ve not yet played that part btw), then this 10/10 stuff is just hype scores imo.
It’s a totally ‘dead’ feeling game, when the first level kicked in and I fired the first shot, I felt immediate disappointment – whether it was the frankly poor sound effects, or underwhelming graphics, I can’t quite put a finger on it; it just felt hollow.
Progressing through about 5-6 levels last night, I felt no connection to the story or game as a whole, it just didn’t grab a hold of me and shake me screaming, by stark contrast, Medal of Honour did actually do this; sure that was also a run of the mill on rails shooter too, but MOH actually seems more realistic than BOPS
It’s not to say that I’m not enjoying it to a degree, but from what I have experienced of SP so far, it’s quite a mediocre game, barely worth 6/10, although the run and gun onslaught nature of it, did put me in the mindset of playing the original and sequel on PC many years back – simple, mindless action.
One thing that really really annoyed me, was how **** poor the AI on both dies is – I mean what a complete step back in gaming, they are think as two short planks, the enemy just charge you without regard for their own survival and your team mates seem to do jack; even when an enemy is standing right in front of them. And don’t even get me started about how inaccurate your team mates are – I’ve had countless occasions where one of my team are literally feet away from the guy they’re shooting and can’t drop him!
As disappointed I was with the shortness of MOH, it is standing head and shoulders above BOPS right now, they’re like night and day, and fan boy loyalty to developments teams aside, you really can see that the guys who made MOH (who I understand to be ex MW guys) are the better bunch. On the subject of MOH, I really missed the lean mechanic, not to mention the selective fire of weapons, the decent team mates, the better sound, the better graphics.... everything really.
So anyway, there are my thoughts so far, people may agree, people may not, but this is my own opinion – much as I’m pimping MOH above though, I prefer BC2 over all
Oh, and let’s hope the MP is brilliant, or this will be a pretty swift trade in once the campaign is done.
