Is Half life 2 any good?

You make me sick.

Summs this thread up!

Still amazed not everyone has played it! Gave away my orange box copy to make sure (I got it on release like a good gaming nerd)

Oh and you can turn the motion blur off (game me motion sickness too) as its some random addon they made last update when it was released on mac (they updated it for the new source engine so it looks awesome again) :D

Half Life 2 is a pile of tosh, it's that bad that i played it twice enjoying every minute of the piece of trash.

I see they've tried to make Alex look like Lara Croft in the cinematic mod, i can see a resemblance.

Yeah thats one of the things really puts me off about that mod.
Something that seems rife in the business at the moment, (Macho men that strike matches off their chisled stubble, or women with ridiculous figures) Valve steer purposefully away from it, then this dude ruins his otherwise brilliant mod by putting those THINGS in it!!!

Half life 2 is an amazing single player fps, much better than crysis:). Normally fps are better played online but with this, it doesn't need it:). I am planning to play it again.

Currently playing it with a Cinematic mod, gives it a darker, almost Stalker-esque feel to it. Play it vanilla when you do get it. It was one of the big title releases of 2004.

Agreed. Buy it, play it with the updated source engine from Valve in vanilla mode as its pretty decent looking already.

Once you've done Half Life 2, get ep1 and ep2 and play these.

Then... Get the cinematic mod to just see what can be done with the game. the new models are a little OTT but it looks amazing.

I honestly can't believe a PC gamer hasn't played Half Life 2. I got the game in 2004, in fact I picked it up 19/11/2004 for £32.49 from Tesco when I went to get my lunch whilst at work... Yep, I kept the receipt, the box and the lot... I loved Half Life so much.. And then I went and lost my Half Life CD. lol

Amazing single player game, runs like silk on newer hardware as well. Remember trying to run the game on a Radeon 9700pro. lol was a bit sluggish even at 1024 x 768 so played in 800 x 600. Then got my 8800GTX and played through again in 1280 x 1024 4 x AA and then got my 5870.. Played it through at 1920 x 1080 max details 16 x AA with the new source engine when valve updated the game...

Now playing it though with cinemod 10.90. Just one of those games that you can play over and over.. Batman Arkham is the only other game for me that has come close to such replay value..

Yes... I do love Half Life 2 if you can't tell..:p

A magnificent, if not the best example of how a game should be for the PC. Brilliant story , characters , graphics , gameplay etc. :D:D

Now compare this with the rubbish (mainly FPS) being churned out these days :(

I know, it makes you cry sometimes. Half Life 2 single play campaign was so utterly brilliant that most other FPS have paled in comparison. I think its fair to exclude multiplayer FPS from this mind.

But any other FPS that relies on the single player campaign has had a hard time to better Half Life 2.

COD 2 was very good, as was COD4 MW single player campaign – just too short to compete with Half Life 2. Metro 2033 could have been a contender but fall short due to dodgy AI and some areas weren’t developed enough..

I fired up Half Life 2 after valve updated the engine and actually thought the game could almost give most modern console FPS graphics a run for its money.

I always wonder if we’ll ever see a FPS like this ever again…!! Half Life 3..!!! We want it now valve.. !! lol

Hmm looking at the screenshots i see what you mean. Graphics look brilliant and most of the generic NPCs look pretty sweet too, but Alyx and Dr wotshername both look like generic big titted heroins instead of actually being original.

Putting my disgust aside for one second (I kid), I'd just like to add my thoughts on the cinematic mod.

This tends to happen with iconic games that start to show their age, someone tries to improve them. The problem is that while this old Source design looks technically dated the game design itself is artistically magnificent, this never ages, it's timeless.

When you start rewriting the technical design of a game it's almost inevitable that you also start taking liberties with the game art too. This is most apparent in the character design, it's cleary some geeks wet dream, it's just not an improvement.

The world redesign looks quite nice in some screens and overly gritty in others. I've not played it with the cinematic mod much myself and I'm not saying it's not worth it, my point is that you should probably play it stock on your first run. You might look at it now and think to yourself that you couldn't endure such dated graphics, but let this be a lesson to you in the power of fantastic art design. Let it immerse you.

I played and loved HL1 back in the day but it did get crazily difficult towards the end. I think I ended up cheating to complete it..

I'm another one that hasn't played HL2 - at the time it came out, I was sick of FPS games. Maybe I should give it a go.

Absolutely loved Portal btw! :D Steam updated it a while ago but I've not loaded it up to see if anything's changed?
