Supplements the debate/discussion thread

I think I got my words mixed up there, the texture is normal, just the taste that reminds me mucus. Chocolate smooth is lush! Have you tried the chocolate mint? Damn that's nice!

Having your shake with full milk greatly increases protein synthesis. Micellar casein (milk protein) has also been proven to be the best protein when it comes to preventing muscle wastage. There are other benefits too, in a bit of a rush at the moment though, as I'm trying to get as many carbs down my throat - got to squat 200kg for 3 today. Wish me luck!

Awesome. Cheers for the info. Was in 2 minds about the unflavoured as people either said 'nasty crap' or 'tastes like vanilla ice cream' so went for choc. Tempted by the mint or nut next, dont fancy the fruits as I feel they may be a bit sweet and sickly.

Nice one, good luck with it!

Adding leucine will help boost protein synthesis - personally I don't feel milk is necessarily sensible unless you're after calories. If you have to use supps and whey, I'd add leucine to it rather than using milk (unless, as I stated, you're after cheap/quick calories).

Leucine tastes a bit ming from what I recall. I capped it for convienience but had a few open in my throat and it wasn't nice!

In theory then milk should be best with a pre-bed shake as it'll slow digestion, increase PS and slow wastage

Pulsing Leucine 3-4 times a day is quite easy and it's relatively cheap. A kilo lasted me several months at 4-months at 7.5 grams a day. ( 3 x 2.5g)

Leucine doesn't taste great, but put in in fruitjuice it's fine - it's one of the few EAAs supplements that actually has had significant scientific research behind it, and after all it's a normal element found in our diets - it's critical to protein synthesis, basic science really!

If you're getting decent protein with that extra leu boost (adding HMB and/or OAKG to really boost things!) does have tangible effects - however, more so on guys at their peak of training with a good regime already in place.

However, as ever, it's expensive (well cheap for a supp but adding everything together), and only really will affect such a tiny %age of your performance that you won't see an over night effect like most supps. People forget these things aren't like gear, they have a tiny effect on you, but with good diet, training and lifestyle they have an effect, but on a small level that is hard to quantify.

Guy at the gym yesterday was talking about M1T, has anyone heard of it?

Methyl 1 Test its a very harsh designer steroid/pro hormone cant remember exactly which one at the moment. It gives big gains in mass but along with a lot of water weight and some pretty rough sides

pro hormone

Can't discuss that here as I'm sure you know, not meaning to patronise, but just wanted to say the old motto, 'if you're going to do something, do it properly'. Go the whole nine yards.

Still have some HMB to cap up actually, might get to it this weekend whilst watching a film. Takes FOREVER.

Sure :)

I managed to get EAA's down my neck with cranberry squash. But it wasn't easy and there was plenty of gagging. Just not worth the effort! EAA's really are in a league of their own. Had to swallow with an open mouth to minimise taste!

Caps ahoy.

Leucine is the 'limiting amino acid', is it not? Meaning that you will only synthesize the amount of amino acids that you have in relation to leucine. So yes, very good stuff.

Couldn't live without milk. I'm happy to follow the science behind increased synthesis when taken with milk, plus the addition of leucine - every little helps.

The set of 200x3 didn't go well. Long story short; I'm never having someone spot me in case of emergency (though there was no need) again - ever. I now have a damaged left shoulder. Sweet.

Someone spotted you when they didn't need to? By mistake as such, assuming a struggled/failed lift? Surely best to have someone spot than to fail the lift and result in injury, though in this case it seems they did the opposite!

How did you damage a shoulder? bar slip?

There were two guys spotting me. The first rep was easy as pie, I slowed down (but didn't stop) on the second so one of the spotters lifted his side of the bar up (though he shouldn't have been anywhere near the bar at this time, as I was still moving), which really buggered things up. Not only did that happen, I racked the right side but the other spotter decided to hold the left side of the bar, then accidentally shunted it below the rack pins - this put huge amounts of pressure on my left side. Immediately afterwords my shoulder was killing, radiating down my whole arm. Now I am getting pains in the left side of my upper back and up to my neck, via my spine. All in all, it went well and as planned.

Just going to rely on the safety pins in the future when it comes to squatting. There is only one person that has ever been able to spot me whilst squatting - my old training partner, but we now have to go at different times.

Sorry if the above is very badly written - my head is a bit fuzzy.

Nah it makes sense. Only one of your spotters 'spotted' and tipped the bar. I prefer to be spotted by having my chest pulled up by just one spotter. Stops any wobble.

Joined the gym almost a month ago here, started off 2 times a week and just upped it to 3 recently. Really getting into it now but feel I need some supplement in my diet as I am looking to put on about a stone.

I am 6ft tall and currently weigh 11.5 stones, but I would like to be around 12.5. I have really sorted my diet out a lot in the past 2 months, I no longer have fizzy drinks or chocolate at all (ok maybe once a week) and I have increased the amount of water I drink. I always go for a grilled chicken meal right after a gym session and generally have a lot of chicken in my diet anyway - the only thing I need to start doing is eating more fruit.

What would you guys recommend? If you can point out 2 or 3 I might wanna look at, it's a start. :)

I, too prefer to have the one spotter as then you cannot have a case of 'too many spotters spoiled the squat', but the seemingly only guy that can perform it correctly trains at a different time to me. What annoyed me the most is that I didn't need the assistance at that point. Ah well, I'll live to squat another day.

Thanks, Cristian. It would seem to be on the mend already - touch wood!

All this seems a little off topic, I'll keep this stuff for the gym rats thread.

Hi there, I have a seriously random question, well kinda, basically I was doing some reading other day about supplements, and you know when you kinda read like 10 websites and then loads of different forums and your sort of sat there reading, well basically I saw loads of people on different forums talking about this new supplement, I dont know quite how knew it is, but I'd never heard of it before and I've been taking supplements for past 12 months or so...whats really bugging me is they were all talking about this new supplement like it was this amazing thing, and I cant remember the name of it, they said its better then nitric oxide and better then creatine and better then everything, and I think they're were saying for strength and you really feel sommat from it in the gym, but I been searching last night and tonight and I cant find the articles and the discusions that I read and its bugging me coz I want to know the name of the supplement.

To help you out, here's the supplements that I've tried upto this point, and its none of these:

Protein shake
glutimane
hmb
creatine
amino acids
multi-vitamins
nitric oxide/nox

If you said the name to me, I'd know it, if ya get me, can someone just write some more supplements that I havent already mentioned, its really popular now apparently so am sure you'll have all heard it and I bet most of you who do take supplements are already taking it.

Thanks in advance.

Going to be using my Jack3d on Tuesday.... really looking forward to my workout!

I also invested in some Andraulic state GT as I have read some good things about this product....

Has anyone used USPlabs OxyElite Pro, people are raving about how well this works. May give these a try in a few months
