cpu freezing

not as yet but i shall 2morrow nite as i'm off to airsoft in the morning. after some googling it seem likely the psu is at fault.
 
septic from your posts you talked about handbrake? Sorry for my lack of info but what exactly is it in computing terms?

Also let me get this straight:

-You have two mobos: Gigabyte and Acer

-You originally started encountering problem with Q6600 in gigabyte mobo. Then you placed Q6600 back in the acer mobo and you encountered the same problem.

-Now your E6600 is causing the same problem and in which mobo is it using?

- You mentioned that your 580w psu connected to gigabyte board is 4 years old almost approaching 5 years.

- You mention that your psu connected to acer mobo isn't suppling enough power either.

Am I correct so far?

handbrake is a video encoding software.. i used it to load all 4 cores on the Q6600 and 2 cores on the E6600.

the rest of ur info is rite. the E6600 is back in the gigabyte board.

but now its says vcore fail in the bios followed by ddr18v fail aswell. i've turned the overclock off and set everything to auto but disabled all the intel speedstep stuff.

I think it is either mobo or psu but your problems seem to be pointing towards psus as both of them seem old. I think you should buy a good quality psu of 600w and then run 'handbrake' test and playing games like crysis for some time.

Edit: It seems everytime you run demanding applications like running games or using cpu intensive software aswell as overclocking, the system crashes. Which would suggest not enough power reaching your pcs as those applications consume a lot of power

For some reason septic I thought we had cleared your PSU as being a possible cause I guess it was another thread.

Borrow a mates PSU and give it a shot.


I was really surprised as you know to hear that a Q6600 had died in service. :D Now it seems the natural balance and order of the world has returned.

Yeah never heard of Q6600 dying. Septic I wouldn't RMA the Q6600 yet until you have got a new PSU and then throughly tested all the possibilities as mentioned in my previous posts.

If it turned out that psu was indeed the culprit and you have rma the Q6600 then this would only result in regret.
 
predator combat games in northern ireland. bit far from hampshire :)

will try to get a new psu this week and try the Q6600 again.
 
got a new ocz silent2stream 700w psu and installed it. no difference!

cpu-z reports vcore as 1.728 even when i set it manully to 1.325. the vcore has been as high a 1.8v according to speedfan and easytune 6. could the weak link be the motherboard?
 
update:

after chopping and changing all the parts:

Q6600 to E6600, different ram, 9800gt to 8800gts, no soundcard, different hard drive and new psu.

the only thing that remained the same is the motherboard so that must be the cause of the freezing.
 
Not sure if it would help or not but I have an old A64 board that isn't stable (when RAM slots are filled) unless the NB voltage is bumped up a notch. Worth a try I suppose.
 
Run memtest 86+, see if you get any errors. If not this will rule out the memory as the cause.

While the memory may not be at fault, the memory controller could be. Your problems certainly sound memory related though.
 
i changed the memory sticks completly, ran memtest on the orginal 4gb sticks and it froze at 6% so i suppose the controller could be borked
