Hi,

Quick spec of my pc, Asus P5KC Motherboard, Q6600 2.4, 4GB DDR2, 8800GT

Planning on changing the gfx for a 460 because newer games e.g. Black Ops runs pretty terribly, 20-30fps.

Will moving to a 460 see a big improvement or am i looking at having to rebuild, e.g. i5, ddr3 ram etc..

Thanks

You should see a decent improvement, and huge jump if you can overclock you CPU to 3Ghz +

You are talking about the higher spec GTX460 ?

Posted this in another thread

Ive got a MSI 6850 coming on monday to replace my 8800gt. So will post some comparisons if your still undecided by then

Firstly overclock your Q6600 ;)
The 6850 is very similar to the 460, so I can let you know my impressions tomorrow, Though i dont have black ops.

- what monitor res are you playing at?

No point upgrading to i5/i3 if you've already got a Q6600, your best bet is get yourself the Gigabyte 460 and a decent CPU HSF and overclock a little.

Thanks for the useful replies

The res im at on Black Opps at present is 1024x768 on a 22" monitor lol... usually im running 1680x1050.

I havnt, ill check later, but in single player and zombies the game runs loads better, only multi player it slows up... ping seems ok doesnt look like connection issue

Before opening up your wallet and purchase a new card, I would suggest you not only overclock the Q6600 as suggested already, but overclocking the 8800GT as well. From what I recall the 8800GT is a very good clocker and the extra performance from the overclock should be quite noticable as well.

If you were saying you want to game at 1920, I would just say to you get a new card; but considering you are only gaming at 1680x1050, I say you should have a go at this first, before buying a new card. Have a look at this:

Download and use MSI Afterburner for overclocking your graphic card and setting custom fanspeed profile by the way.

Thanks will definatly have a go, ill no doubt end up getting a new card anyway as i fancy an upgrade for future games. Been a long time since i did any oc'ing, by the way im running on a 500W PSU (EarthWatts) - is this still good to go?

Antec EarthWatts 500W is it? It is a very decent PSU, and would handle any single GPU graphic card, except for GTX480/GTX580, and cutting a bit close on the GTX470 as well if you are overclocking you system.
Overclocked Q6600 system plus a 6850/GTX460 1GB should not even exceeding 350-400W in total.

Fact 1
Black ops multiplayer has know issues and runs slow.
Fact 2
6850/70 much better choice that 460
Fact 3
U need to up that CPU clock.

I know BlackOps has some general laggy problems at the moment but my friends PC (470 GTX etc..) runs it at 80+fps, its TONS better than mine, so im pretty sure mine is hardware related and not just because it's a buggy game.

Is it actually fact that the ATi is better? I must admit i am more of an Nvidia man, but if the ATi is a lot better perhaps its worth a look? Although maybe this will create a massive debate on what is better...hopefully not

I will get onto upping the CPU ! :)
